Effects of Materialist Values and Work Centrality on Organizational Citizenship Behaviors

The current study investigates the effects of work centrality and materialistic values on organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs). The importance of organizational citizenship behaviors has been well documented in the management literature. Although OCBs are hard to define, researchers emphasize that these behaviors are more or less discretionary, less likely to be formally linked with organizational rewards and contribute to the organization by promoting a positive social and psychological climate. Although the accumulation of research on OCBs and related constructs is vast, materialistic values as an antecedent have received scant attention. In the current study, materialistic values and work centrality are investigated as predictors of OCB, which have inverse effects on the construct. In a cross-sectional design, 439 employees from various companies in Turkey participated in an online survey. The findings support the claim that inverse effects from work centrality and materialistic values influenced OCB. Upon deconstructing the antecedents’ impact on the dimensions of OCB, the results revealed a positive predictive effect of work centrality on helping and civic virtue. In contrast, materialistic values exerted a negative influence only on helping behaviors. Implications and future research directions are discussed in line with the findings.
“As Reliable as a Kalashnikov Rifle”: How Sputnik News Promotes Russian Vaccine Technologies in the Turkish Twittersphere

Established in 2014, SputnikTR (a localized version of Sputnik News) is the most popular pro-Russian media outlet active in Turkey. The news content published by SputnikTR's Twitter account currently attracts the highest engagement rates among the international public broadcasters active in Turkey. SputnikTR's official Twitter account has more followers (1M) than Sputnik News English (326K). This article argues that SputnikTR's Twitter account is used to promote Russian vaccine technologies in Turkey. We believe that it is also a conduit for the dissemination of pro-Russian as well as anti-Western narratives to the Turkish online public. Using a computational methodology, we collected 2,782 vaccine-related tweets posted by SputnikTR's Twitter account between April 2019 and April 2021. We deployed framing as well as critical discourse analysis to study the contents of our dataset. Our findings suggest that SputnikTR uses (a) disinformation as well as misinformation in vaccine-related news and (b) unethical communication techniques to maximize engagement with content posted on Twitter. Our findings are significant insofar as they are the first documented instances of Russian propaganda efforts on Turkish Twitter. These efforts seem to be focused on promoting the Russian vaccine while encouraging public hesitancy toward Western vaccine technologies.
AIsmosis and the pas de deux of human-AI interaction: Exploring the communicative dance between society and artificial intelligence

As the global influence of artificial intelligence (AI) in our daily lives and the looming advent of artificial general intelligence (AGI) become increasingly apparent, the need for a sophisticated interpretive framework intensifies. This paper introduces ‘AIsmosis’–a term that captures AI’s gradual, nuanced integration into society, and akin to the biological process of osmosis. AI’s integration dynamics are examined through the lens of three pivotal theories: social construction of technology, technological determinism, and diffusion of innovations. These theories collectively elucidate the sociocultural influences on AI, the potential repercussions of unchecked technological growth, and the factors driving the adoption of novel technologies. Building upon these explorations, the ‘controlled AIsmosis’ conceptual framework emerges, emphasizing ethically conscious development, active stakeholder communication, and democratic dialogue in the context of AI technology adoption. Rooted in communicative action theory, this framework illuminates AI’s transformative impact on society. It calls for a comprehensive evaluation of systems that steer AI diffusion and their potential impacts, acknowledging the pervasive influence of AI and transcending traditional disciplinary boundaries. This work underscores the need for a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach in investigating the complex AI-society interplay and understanding the ethical and societal consequences of AIsmosis.
Automatic detection of attachment style in married couples through conversation analysis

Analysis of couple interactions using speech processing techniques is an increasingly active multi-disciplinary field that poses challenges such as automatic relationship quality assessment and behavioral coding. Here, we focused on the prediction of individuals' attachment style using interactions of recently married (1-15 months) couples. For low-level acoustic feature extraction, in addition to the frame-based acoustic features such as mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) and pitch, we used the turn-based i-vector features that are the commonly used in speaker verification systems. Sentiments, positive and negative, of the dialog turns were also automatically generated from transcribed text and used as features. Feature and score fusion algorithms were used for low-level acoustic features and text features. Even though score and feature fusion algorithms performed similar, predictions with score fusion were more consistent when couples have known each other for a longer period of time.
Online News Media Portrayal of ADHD on the Websites of BBC and CNN International during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Purpose. Individuals with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have experienced exacerbated symptoms and negative effects during the pandemic on both physical and mental health. However, the leading global news websites did not cover the vulnerabilities and special needs of individuals with ADHD in the context of the neurodiversity approach. I argue that both and did not incorporate the neurodiversity approach aiming to increase acceptance and inclusion of the differences without viewing them as deficits. Methods. The present study explores online news media portrayal of ADHD during the COVID-19 pandemic through content analysis between March 2020 and October 2022. The news articles mentioning ADHD (64 from and 56 from ) were analyzed. Results. Findings show that ADHD was dominantly framed as a medical issue, far from the neurodiversity perspective. Only 13 news articles among 64 (approximately 20%) on and 4 among 56 (less than 10%) on incorporated the neurodiversity approach that would benefit both individuals with ADHD and the whole society during the pandemic. Practice Implications. The findings show a need for more awareness of neurodiversity in the news media and a broader coverage of ADHD-related neurodiversity during the pandemic.
Parrhesia as Journalism: Learning from the Truth- and Justice-seeking Women Journalists of twentieth Century Turkey

Abstract: Despite ongoing endeavours to decolonize and de-westernize journalism studies, the current literature offers very few clues about the history of women’s journalistic practices and struggles in Third World/Global South contexts. The objective of this article is to help to fill this gap by focusing on the lived experiences and struggles of key Turkish-speaking women journalists who worked in private and public sector media outlets in Turkey in the period 1920–1980. Drawing on these women’s self-narratives and biographical accounts, as well as arguments in debates on parrhesia and emancipatory journalism in dialogue with Third World/Global South feminist epistemologies, we explore the ways in which journalism has been a site of life-time resistance and struggle for women seeking justice and truth on behalf of the oppressed. Their conceptualization of journalistic identity as truth- and justice-seekers in an unfree media environment, and their determination to speak the truth to challenge intersecting forces of domination cannot be captured in the binary of “media freedom” and “media development” paradigms. Nonetheless, their struggle to dismantle oppressive reality by way of distinctive, courageous, justice-seeking and truthful communication can be educative at a time when the relationship between journalism and truth is increasingly being undermined. © 2022 The Author(s). Can Decent Work Explain Employee-Level Outcomes? The Roles of Work–Family and Family–Work Conflict

Abstract: Decent work (DW) has emerged as a growing paradigm for all, entailing fundamental principles and rights at work which can pervade all human resource management (HRM)practices. While studies on DW are generally examined on macro levels, such as social, economic, legal, and political, the rising emphasis to realize the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 8 of the UN and highlight the importance of quality of employment in this paper we draw our attention to the DW concept at the micro level The purpose of this study is to explore whether DW is associated with ‘employee performance’ and ‘intention to leave’. Additionally, the aim is to investigate whether work–family conflict (WFC) and family–work conflict (FWC) can serve as moderating variables under the job demands–resources (JD–R) model. Data were collected from employees working for 392 organisations, who represented their companies at a national career fair in Turkey. The results have revealed the role and importance of securing DW as a significant job resource for sustaining positive employee outcomes, including high performance and a reduced intention to leave. Furthermore, the study has shown that while WFC has moderating effects on performance and employees’ turnover intentions, FWC serves as a moderating variable, weakening the relationship between DW and intention to leave in case of adverse family demands.
“Bana göre” ahlak: Sıradan insanın ahlakı kavramsallaştırması

Özet:Shweder ve diğerleri (1997), Kohlberg’in (1971) ahlakın evrenselliği ve en önemli erdemin adalet olduğu varsayımlarını reddetmişler ve farklı kültürlerde farklı derecelerde önemsenen “ahlakın üç temel etiği”ni önererek kültürel çeşitliliği varsaymışlardır. Walker ve Pitts (1998) ise, bugünkü ahlak araştırmalarının bir eksiğinin sıradan insanın doğal ahlak kavramsallaştırmalarının çalışılmaması olduğunu ifade etmektedirler. Bu araştırmanın amacı, toplumumuzda ahlakın nasıl kavramsallaştırıldığına ve bu kavramsallaştırmaların Shweder’in üç etik koduyla nasıl ilişkilendiğine bakmaktır. Bu araştırma üç aşamadan oluşmaktadır. Çalışma 1 kapsamında katılımcılardan açık uçlu olarak ahlak/ahlaksızlık/ ahlaklı insan-erkek-kadın/ahlaksız insan-erkek-kadını tanımlamaları istenmiştir. Kodlanan cevaplar, tanımlanan bu altı hedef arasında bazı ortaklıklara ve farklılıklara işaret etmektedir. En fazla atıfta bulunan kategori, toplumsal kurallar ve roller olmuştur. Çalışma 2 için, Çalışma 1’den elde edilen kategorilerden “Bana Göre Ahlak Envanteri” (BGA) oluşturulmuştur. BGA’ya verilen cevapların oluşturduğu örüntüler, Shweder ve diğerlerinin öne sürdüğü üç etik koduyla benzerlikler göstermiştir. Bu paralellikleri incelemek üzere Çalışma 3 çerçevesinde, üç etik kodunu ölçmeye yönelik olan Etik Dünya Görüşü anketi ile BGA Envanteri arasındaki ilişki tanımlayıcı ve doğrulayıcı faktör analizleri de kullanarak incelenmiştir. Sonuçlar, ülkemizde ahlakın kavramsallaştrılmasında Shweder’in üç etik koduna benzer bir yapı ortaya çıktığını ve oluşturduğumuz BGA Envanterinin güvenilir ve geçerli bir ölçüm yöntemi olduğunu göstermektedir.
Erişkin dikkat eksikliği ve hiperaktivite bozukluğunda zihin kuramı, dürtüsellik ve bilişsel işlevler arasındaki ilişki

Özet: Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı erişkin dikkat eksikliği ve hiperaktivite bozukluğu (DEHB) hastalarında nörobilişsel işlevler ile zihin okuma performansı ve dürtüsellik arasındaki ilişkiyi saptamaktır. Yöntem: Çalışmaya erişkin DEHB tanısı konulmuş olan 18-65 yaş arasında 30 hasta ile 30 sağlıklı kontrol alındı. Tüm katılımcılara DSM-IV Eksen I Bozuklukları için Yapılandırılmış Klinik Görüşme (SCID-I), Erişkin DEHB Öz Bildirim Ölçeği (EDHÖ), Barratt Dürtüsellik Ölçeği (BDÖ), Gözlerden Zihin Okuma Testi (GZOT) ve nöropsikolojik testler (Sayı Dizisi Testi, İşitsel Sessiz Üç Harf Sıralaması Testi, Rey İşitsel Sözel Öğrenme ve Bellek Testi, Görsel Kopyalama Testi, Kontrollü Kelime Çağrışım Testi ve Stroop Testi) uygulandı. Bulgular: DEHB grubunda EDHÖ ve BDÖ puan ortalamaları kontrol grubuna göre yüksek saptandı. GZOT puan ortalaması karşılaştırıldığında iki grup arasında anlamlı farklılık bulunmadı. DEHB grubunda İşitsel Sessiz Üç Harf Sıralaması Testi puanı, Stroop kelime okuma hata sayısı alt testi puanı ve kontrollü kelime çağrışım testinin perseverasyon puanı kontrol grubuna göre yüksek saptandı. Korelasyon analizinde BDÖ dikkatsel dürtüsellik alt ölçek puanı ile ileri sayı dizisi test puanı arasında; BDÖ motor dürtüsellik alt ölçek puanı ile REY 1 ve REY 5 test puanı arasında; BDÖ plansızlık alt ölçek puanı ile REY 5 test puanı arasında; BDÖ toplam puanı ile ileri sayı dizisi, REY 1, REY 5, REY1-5 ve REY 7 test puanları arasında negatif yönde anlamlı ilişki saptandı. Sonuç: Erişkin DEHB hastalarında sözel bellek işlevleri dürtüsellik ile ilişkilidir. DEHB hastalarında dürtüsellik, yürütücü işlevler ve zihin kuramı birbirinden bağımsız işlevler olabilir.

Abstract: Leadership is a value gained through education and experience. Leadership communication has the potential make corporate communications and risk management processes more dynamic and efficient. From these aspects, leader communication can be very influential over sustainability of corporate success. The current study aims to explore how authoritative and transactional leadership styles result with various challenges during crisis communication and management. The crises experienced by The Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Toyota, Facebook and the United Airlines companies are explored as case studies. The analysis is not limited with the crisis processes, but also questions the efficiency of leadership models embraced by managers of these two organizations.
The Uncanniness of The Shining

Özet: Stanley Kubrick’in 1980 yapımı The Shining (Cinnet) filmi, bugüne kadar sayısız defa incelenmiş ve analiz edilmeye çalışılmıştır. 40 yıl geçmiş olmasına rağmen, filmin gerçekte neyi anlatmak istediği, Torrance ailesinin başına gelen olayların aslı, hala tam olarak anlaşılmamıştır. Hayal ile gerçek arasında, belirsiz bir alanda süregelen filmin senaryosunu oluştururken Kubrick, Sigmund Freud’un Das Unheimlich (1919) isimli makalesinden yararlandığını belirtmiştir. Türkçe’ye tekinsizlik olarak çevrilmiş the uncanny, aşina olduğumuz insan ve şeylerin içinde yatan rahatsız edici duyguların neden olduğu korku ve endişe olarak nitelendirmektedir. Terimin temelinde bir ikilik yatmaktadır. Bu ikilik, tanıdık bir şeyin yabancılık içermesinden kaynaklanmaktadır, yani, tanıdık olan ile yeni beliren arasında oluşan bir haldir. Bu çalışmanın amacı da Cinnet filmindeki tekinsiz duygulara yol açan öğelerini tespit edip, filmdeki bastırılmış ve çelişkili olan arzuların Overlook Oteli’nin rüya-vari ortamında ne şekilde yüzeye çıkıp, egonun parçalanmasına tehdit oluşturduğunu incelemektir
Otizm Riski Görülen Bir Olgu ile Erken Dönem Gelişimsel Destek Çalışması

Özet: Otizm yaygın olarak sosyal etkileşim ve iletişimde eksiklik ile tekrarlayıcı, tuhaf hareketlerin varlığı ile tarif edilmektedir. Özellikle sosyo-duygusal gelişimde belirgin bir aksama görülmektedir. Sosyo-duygusal gelişimin uyarılmasında (ilişki arzusunu uyandırmak ve geliştirmek, benlik algısını oluşturmak ve geliştirmek, sözel iletişimi uyarmak) oyun ve sanat temelli psikoterapinin işlevsel olacağı düşünülmektedir. Bu makale, otistik gelişimi düşündüren belirtilerin saptanması ile başlanan gelişimsel değerlendirme ve destek çalışmalarını içermektedir. Gelişimsel destek çalışması kapsamında 19 aylık erkek çocuğu olan olgu ile gerçekleştirilen 60 seanslık (19.-39. aylar arasında) süreçte, gelişimin oyun/sanat terapisi yöntemleriyle desteklendiği psikoterapi seanslarının yanı sıra, annesi ile eşzamanlı olarak seanslar sürdürülmüştür. Çalışma; kuramsal yaklaşım, formülasyon ve uygulama teknikleri açısından psikodinamik temelde tanımlanmıştır. Ailenin gözlemleri ve özellikle annenin çocuğu tutabilme ve taşıyabilme gücünde sağlanan dönüşüm ve iyileşmeler de psikodinamik formülasyonla değerlendirilmiştir. 60 seans sonunda Y.K.’nın göz göze gelmekten çekinmediği, kendini ifade etmek için arzu duymaya başladığı, kelime dağarcığının geliştiği, oyunlarının çeşitlendiği, bağımsızlaşma yolunda ilerlediği ve öznenin gelişimi bağlamında önemli noktalardan biri olan, yaratıcılığını ortaya koyabildiği gözlenmiştir. Bu olgu sunumunun, otizmde erken belirtilerin tanınması, gelişimin ilişki yoluyla, oyun ve sanat aracılığıyla uyarılarak desteklenmesi ve ailenin çalışmada sistemli biçimde ele alınması yönünden önerici bir uygulama olduğu düşünülmektedir.
Looking at Robert Altman’s cinema through an anti-hollywood perspective

Abstract: This article aims to analyze Robert Altman’s narrative and cinematic discourses as developed through his personal style from an anti-Hollywood perspective, by looking at two of his films: McCabe and Mrs. Miller (1971) and Nashville (1975). The article will concentrate on filmic characteristics seen in many of Altman’s films but more prominent in these particular films. Among these characteristics, one can see subversion of generic tropes; particularly that of the western – a genre which is associated with America itself. Through the ironic subversion of narrative codes, Altman has created an anti-western text. While doing this, Altman often employs self-reflexive elements and open endings in order to make the audience reflect on the values of their culture, particularly popular culture. The films, made in the 1970s, come after a period of hope for society and Hollywood; while the revolutionary fervor of the 1960s had fizzled, the devastating effects of the Vietnam War were being felt throughout society. Moreover, Hollywood’s renaissance was slowly giving way to blockbusters. In the films examined, Altman engages in a criticism of American culture by looking at masculinity, politics and show business. This criticism is laden with irony, employing an anti-Hollywood perspective, as distinguished by his auteurism.
The Role of ıntertextual associations in localization processes: The Case of suskunlar

Abstract: This article aims to discuss localization processes in scripted format adaptations by particularly focusing on Turkish TV series Suskunlar which is later adapted in the U.S. as Game of Silence. By adopting a discursive approach, the article aims to investigate a wide range of information that is spread about Suskunlar and Game of Silence in the Turkish and American media sphere. The article is especially interested in investigating the role that ‘intertextuality’ play in localizing scripted formats and intends to point at the different localization processes that the series go under in different localities.
İç girişimcilik eğilimine insan kaynakları yönetimi uygulamalarından bakış

Özet: Girişimcilik olgusunun işletmelerin içsel faaliyetlerine yönelmesi, iç girişimcilik kavramını ortaya çıkarmıştır. İç girişimcilik ve yenilikçiliğin desteklenmesi konusunda, yüksek performanslı iş sistemleri (YPİS) içinde ele alınan insan kaynakları yönetimi (İKY) uygulamaları önemli bir yere sahiptir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, stratejik İKY’nde uyum ve esneklik yaklaşımı çerçevesinde YPİS içinde ele alınan İKY uygulamalarının örgütlerdeki iç girişimcilik eğilimine olası etkilerini kavramsal bir çerçevede incelemektir. Ayrıca, iç girişimcilik ve yenilikçiliği destekleyebileceği düşünülen yüksek performanslı İKY uygulamalarındaki değişimlerden örnekler verilmektedir
Seeing the belly dance as a feminist possibility: gaze, gender and public space in istanbul

Özet: Bu çalışma, kadim bir dans formu olan göbek dansı üzerinden Türkiye’de kamusal alanda kadın bedeninin erkek bakışı tarafından çevrelenmesini ele alır. Göbek dansını kolektif bir ritüel olmaktan çıkarıp erkek bakışına hizmet eden bir anlayışa dönüştüren eğlence sektörüne bir alternatif olarak, dansı feminist bir pratiğe dönüştürebilmenin ve kolektif bir hareket olarak sunabilmenin olasılıklarını önerir. Bu çalışma Susturulmuş Grup Teorisi üzerinden çerçevelenir ve ayrıca görsel sanat alanından çeşitli kadın sanatçıların ürettiği çeşitli işleri de diğer feminist stratejiler olarak örnekler. Göbek dansını feminist bir kimliğin parçası olarak görebilmenin ve sahiplenmenin olanaklarını sanat üzerinden temellendirir.
Değişen tüketici kültüründe yeni trend: ortak tüketim

Özet: Tüketicilerin çeşitli mal ve hizmetlerin mülkiyet hakkını edinmeleri yerine diledikleri mal ve hizmetlere istedikleri zaman erişimlerinin olması temeline dayanan ortak tüketim kavramı, araba paylaşımından kredi kooperatiflerine, oyuncak kütüphanelerinden ortak ofis alanlarına kadar pek çok farklı şekillerde gündelik hayatın içerisinde yer almaktadır. Ancak tüketicilerin mülk edinme anlayışları üzerinde önemli etkisi bulunan ve tüketici davranışlarını değiştirme gücüne sahip olan bu yeni akıma -ortak tüketim anlayışına- ilişkin yapılan akademik çalışmaların dünyadaki örneklerinin artmasına rağmen, özellikle Türk pazarlama yazınında bu konudaki araştırmalar oldukça sınırlıdır. Bu çalışma, tüketicilerin ürün ve hizmetlerin sahiplenilmesine ilişkin (ortak tüketim) niyet ve tutumlarını incelemeyi amaçlamıştır. Tüketicilerin algıladıkları ekonomik, çevresel ve psikolojik faydaların bu yeni gelişen trende yönelik tutum ve eğilimlerini etkileyeceği öngörülmüş ve beklenen ilişkileri test etmek amacıyla toplam 456 tüketiciye anket uygulanmıştır. Sonuç olarak, ortak tüketime yönelik tutum ve davranışların bahsi geçen fayda beklentilerinden güçlü şekilde etkilendiği ortaya konmuş; fakat bu sisteme duyulan güvenin öngörülen ilişkilerde bir moderatör etkisi olduğu kanıtlanamamıştır.
Yaşamsal bilinmezlik: İklim krizi ve gıda

ÖZET: Küresel iklim değişikliği ya da iklim krizi, etkileri ve sonuçlarıyla dünya çapında bütün ekosistemleri ve toplumları ve her sektörü önemli ölçüde etkileyecek ve zorlayacak bir döneme girmemize neden olmaktadır ve bu etkilerin her geçen zaman daha da ağırlaşacağı bilinmektedir. Bu yazıda iklim krizinin sağlık ve özelde gıda üretim ve tüketimiyle bağlantısı ile ortaya çıkan etkilere yanıt olarak geliştirilen ve geliştirilebilecek önlemlere değinilmektedir. Krizin boyutları, şiddetini artırarak ilerleyecek kaotik yapısı ve süreğenliği düşünüldüğünde yalnızca tekil veya yalıtılmış önlemler ve tekniklerle sınırlı kalmayan hızlı ve kapsamlı bir dönüşüm ile buna uygun bir toplumsal ve kurumsal örgütlenme gerçekleştirilmesi ve toplumsal ve mesleki örgütlenmelerin de kendi hazırlıklarını hızla yapmaları gerekmektedir.
Kişiye özgü sözleşmelerin kariyer başarısına etkisinde algılanan istihdam edilebilirliğin aracı rolü

ÖZET: Yeni kariyer yaklaşımları günümüzde çalışanlar ve işverenlerin istihdam güvencesine ilişkin sorumluluklarını değiştirmiştir. İşverenler artık çalışanlarına yaşam boyu istihdam garantisi vermemekte; ancak başarılı ve örgüte bağlı kişilerin örgütte kalmalarını sağlamak için kariyer geliştirme fırsatlarını onlara sunmaktadırlar. Çalışanlar ise kariyerleri ile ilgili sorumluluklarının farkındadırlar ve istihdam edilebilirliklerini arttırma çabası içerisindedirler. Dolayısıyla, geçmişte kişi ile işvereni arasında gerçekleşen ve işverenin çalışana yaşam boyu istihdam garantisi sağlayan eski psikolojik sözleşmenin yerini, sözleşme koşullarının müzakere edilebilirliği durumunda ortaya çıkan kişiye özgü sözleşmeler almıştır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, kişiye özgü sözleşmelerin kariyer başarısına etkisinde algılanan istihdam edilebilirliğin aracı rolü olup olmadığını incelemektir. Aaştırmanın kapsamını bilişim sektörü çalışanları oluşturmuş olup, kolayda örneklem yöntemi ile 110 kişiden elde edilen veriler anket yöntemi ile toplanmıştır. Hipotezler SPSS 21 istatistik programı aracılığı ile test edilmiştir
