The comparison of the day of the week effects in the stock market for pre-COVID and post-COVID periods: an oil industry example

Abstract

Bu çalışma, petrol ürünlerinin getirilerinde takvim anomalilerini, özellikle hafta günü (DOW) etkisini araştırmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu çalışmada kullanılan hisse senetleri, ABD için Chevron Corp, SHEL ve ExxonMobil; Suudi Arabistan için Advanced Petrochemical Company, Saudi Mining ve Arabian Pipes Company; ve Türkiye için Tüpraş, Turcas ve Petkim'dir. Hafta günü etkisi, ortalama getiri dağılımının haftanın gününe bağlı olarak farklılık gösterdiği bir olgudur. Bu durum, getiri ve volatilitenin haftanın her gününde benzer olması gerektiğini öngören Etkin Piyasa Teorisi ile çelişmektedir. Başka bir deyişle, hafta günü etkisi, Etkin Piyasa Teorisi anomalisi türüne dönüşebilir. The stocks used in this study are Chevron Corp, SHEL, and ExxonMobil for the USA, Advanced Petrochemical Company, Saudi Mining, and Arabian Pipes Company for Saudi Arabia, and Tüpraş, Turcas, and Petkim for the country of Türkiye. The day-of-the-week effect is a phenomenon wherein the mean return distribution differs based on the day of the week. This is in contradiction to the Efficient Market Theory, which expects that returns and volatility should be similar on each day of the week. Stated differently, the day-of-the-week impact could possibly form into a type of Efficient Market Theory anomaly. It is one of the most vital calendar anomalies identified in countless stock markets across the world, therefore examined by several researchers for years, consequently, obtaining a wide range of distinct outcomes. We focus on examining the log return distribution in these oil industry stocks before the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and what unfolds after. We generate log returns from obtaining daily price series of yahoo finance data and employ the ARCH and GARCH models to identify existence of DOW effects on stock market returns and their volatility to find statistically significant evidence of positive or negative DOW effects. Daily closing prices are focused on in the study, owing to establishing more liquidity and precisely investigating how investor decisions could be based on minor changes. Empirical results reveal that the DOW effect affects returns and volatility in oil stocks, with pre- and post-COVID data providing insights for future investors.
