Representation of Women in Post-Revolutionary Iranian Cinema? aims to focus on the portrayal of women in Iranian films produced after the Islamic Revolution of 1979, a turning point in the history of Iran with the changes and transformations it brought in terms of the political, social and the economic. Initially, a detailed exploration of the women issue in Iran will be presented and answers to several questions like: What has changed for Iranian women after the revolution; whether they have lost their rights they had before or not; could we talk about the existence of certain restrictive enforcements for them; and how revolution affected their lives, will be approached as a background information. In this context, how women live in Iran, placed in the religious point of view in terms of the Shari?a, the traditional codes that define their status, their responsibilities and freedom in the public and private space, is explored by including different perspectives and counter arguments as much as possible to enable a full picture and a deeper understanding of the women issue. Then, under the light of the key concepts, how women issue is presented in the Iranian films produced after 1990s is examined. In this sense, narrational strategies, storyline as well as the visual leitmotifs of the films chosen is inquired. Furthermore, the distinctive features about their representation in public and private space and the mechanisms to avoid restrictive censorship in depiction of women characters will be explored as well.
