ABSTRACT: Depression, which is associated with emotional eating and obesity, is a very important mood disorder. In this study, it is aimed to evaluate the relationship between emotional eating behaviors, food choice, depression and body mass index (BMI) in adults. The study was conducted with 208 adult participants between the ages of 18-65, living in Istanbul, with a random sample selection. 28% of the participants are male and 72% are female. When the relationship between body mass index and gender was examined, it was determined that women were more obese than men (p<0.05). Weak individuals; had a lower mean weight control score than normal, slightly obese, 1st and 2nd degree obese individuals (p<0.01). Weak individuals; It was determined that they exhibited less restrictive eating behavior than normal, slightly obese and 1st degree obese individuals (p<0.05). It was found that thin, normal, slightly obese and 1st degree obese individuals had lower emotional eating scores than 2nd degree obese individuals (p<0.05). Thin, normal, slightly obese and 1st degree obese individuals were found to have lower mean external eating scores than 2nd degree obese individuals (p<0.05). In this study, it was found that those who do regular physical activity according to the food choice test have higher health, natural content, weight control and total score averages than those who do not (p<0.05). Individuals with moderate and severe depression have a higher mean emotional eating score than those with minimal depression (p<0.05). The mean restrictive eating behavior score of those with minimal and mild depression was lower than those with severe depression (p<0.05). In addition, the mean external eating behavior score of those with minimal depression was lower than those with moderate depression (p<0.05). As a result, it was concluded that psychological eating behaviors such as emotional, external and restrictive eating in the presence of depression are effective on the current nutritional status of individuals.
