ABSTRACT: Erzurum Atatürk University campus, which was established in 1955 in line with the idea of a "Eastern University" envisioned by Atatürk for the young Republic of Turkey, is one of the first modern university campuses built in the Republic of Turkey. The Ministry of Public Works organized an international competition in 1956 for the design of the campus, which is a regional university established to serve as a center for the Eastern Anatolia region, and the winner of this competition was the project group consisting of architects Enver Tokay, Hayati Tabanlıoğlu, Ayhan Tayman and Behruz Çinici. The university campus, designed as an example of Land-Grant type university campuses in the USA, was planned to support the economic and agricultural activities of the city. This study, which aims to document Turkey's modern architectural heritage in the 20th century, covers the architectural and urban formation and development process of Erzurum Atatürk University between 1950-70, with its campus being the first planned modern university campus in Turkey. The documentation is further supported by theoretical readings and documents obtained from personal archives of the project architects. It is a documentation study that evaluates the campus grounds and buildings of Erzurum Atatürk University according to modern architectural heritage criteria as well as design criteria of modern university campuses and consequently reveals the current state of its buildings.
