Young women's experiences of sexual agency in heterosexual intimate relationships

Özet
Cinsel eylemlilik (sexual agency) kişinin kendi cinselliğini yönetme ve cinsellikte sorumluk alma kapasitesidir. Genç kadınların fiziksel, cinsel ve ruh sağlığını etkileyen, güvenli olmayan ve istenmeyen cinsel deneyimlerden korunma, cinsel sağlık ve cinsel memnuniyetin sağlanması, kişisel refah gibi bazı davranış ve hallerle bağlantısı ortaya konmuştur. Bu konuda yapılmış önceki çalışmalar, cinsel sağlık ve memnuniyetin sağlanması ile ilgili olarak cinsel iletişim ve cinsel rızanın yanı sıra cinsiyet ideolojileri ve normları, kadın cinselliğine yönelik tutumlar ve akran normları dahil olmak üzere sosyokültürel bağlamların etkilerini incelemiştir. Türkiye'de yapılmış çalışmalarda genç kadınların cinsel davranışları, cinsiyet normları, cinsel senaryolar, cinsel inanışlar ve cinselliğe yönelik tutumlar açısından araştırılmış olsa da cinsel eylemliliği kalitatif yöntemlerle incelemiş olan bir çalışmaya rastlanmamıştır. Literatürdeki bu boşluğu doldurmak adına, bu çalışma Türkiye'deki genç kadınların heteroseksüel romantik ilişkilerindeki cinsel eylemlilik deneyimlerini incelemiştir. Bu çalışma; genç kadınların heteroseksüel ilişkilerinde cinsel eylemliliği nasıl deneyimledikleri ve ortaya koyduklarını, cinsel eylemliliğin genç kadınlar için ne anlama geldiğini ve ilişkileri boyunca cinsel eylemliliğin nasıl değiştiğini keşfetmeyi hedeflemiştir. Çalışma sırasında, araştırmacı tarafından bireysel olarak yürütülmüş olan yarı-yapılandırılmış görüşmeler araştırma sırasında en az 6 aydır romantik bir ilişkide olan 18-25 yaş aralığında on genç kadın ile yapılmıştır. Veriler keşfedici bir nitel araştırma çerçevesinde MAXQDA 2020'de tematik analiz kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Katılımcıların açıklamalarından dört ana tema üretilmiştir: a) Cinselliğin deneyimlenerek keşfedilmesi, b) cinselliğin birlikte yürütülmesi, c) hazzı müzakere etmek ve d) kadın cinselliğinin toplumsal inşasının içinde hareket etmek. Sonuçlar, genç kadınların cinsel eylemlilik deneyimlerinin romantik ilişikleri içinde gelişmiş olduğunu ve bu süreçte cinsel olarak aktif bir kadın olmanın getirdiği psikolojik, kişilerarası ve sosyokültürel zorlukları aşmakta olduğunu göstermiştir. Sonuçlar ilgili literatür ışığında tartışılmış ve kadın cinselliği, cinsel sağlığı ve refahı için klinik ve koruyucu müdahalelerle ilgili çıkarımlar sunulmuştur. Çalışmanın güçlü yönleri ve sınırlamaları tartışılmış ve gelecekteki çalışmalar için öneriler paylaşılmıştır.
Sexual agency refers to one's ability to take responsibility for and direct one's own sexuality. It has been shown to be associated with a number of physical, sexual and mental health outcomes in young women such as protection from unsafe and unwanted sexual experiences, sexual and relationship satisfaction and personal well-being. Available research on sexual agency examines sexual communication and consent in terms of maintenance of sexual health and negotiation of sexual satisfaction as well as the effects of sociocultural contexts including gender ideologies and norms, attitudes towards women's sexuality and peer norms. In Turkey, although sexual behaviors of young women have been investigated in relation to gender norms, sexual scripts and beliefs and attitudes toward sexuality, no previous work has studied sexual agency within a qualitative design. To address this gap in the literature, the present study explores young women's sexual agency experiences in their heterosexual intimate relationships in Turkey. The fundamental questions that the study explored were how young women experience and manifest sexual agency in heterosexual intimate relationships, what sexual agency means for them and how their sense of sexual agency changes throughout the course of their relationships. During the study, ten young women with an age range of 18-25, who have been in committed heterosexual relationships for at least 6 months at the time of the data collection process were interviewed individually by the researcher. The data was analyzed by using thematic analysis in MAXQDA 2020 within an exploratory qualitative research frame. Four main themes were generated from the participants' accounts: a) Exploring sexuality through experience, b) navigating sexuality together, c) negotiating pleasure and d) moving through social constructions of women's sexuality. Young women's narratives revealed that their sense of sexual agency and its manifestation developed within their relationships while they simultaneously navigated and overcame the psychological, interpersonal and sociocultural challenges of becoming sexually active women. The results of the study are discussed in light of the literature and the implications of the findings for clinical and preventative interventions on women's sexuality, sexual health and well-being are presented. The strengths and limitations of the study are discussed and future research directions are offered.
