ABSTRACT: Child representations that reflect the perspective of the society towards children have also an influence on the construction of childhood in the society. In child representations in the media, healthcare and civil society, children are represented in passive figures, in the positions of criminal, object, in need or victim and mostly by relating to negative issues. These representations that put into circulation are far from a rights-based perspective that sees the child as an individual and a right-holder subject. While protectionist and paternalist approaches against children are dominant in the field of health, adults' protectionism on children increases in the case of cancer. The main purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the perspectives of non-governmental organizations working for children with cancer with respect to children with cancer, their approach in communication activities about them, and child representations produced by these institutions within the framework of children's rights. For this purpose, five in-depth interviews were held with the employees responsible for the corporate communication of ÇOKSEV, KAÇOD, KAÇUV, KAYD and LÖSEV, working on children with cancer, and these interviews were examined through thematic analysis methodology. Additionally, 25 images used by these institutions in their communication activities were analyzed through semiotic analysis. The findings obtained were interpreted within the framework of the principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the institutions’ approaches towards children with cancer and the child images they produced were evaluated from a rights-based framework. As a result of this study, it has been determined that NGOs working on children with cancer adopt mostly an aid-based approach and they need to develop a child rights-based perspective which will guide their activities and communications and that considers children as individuals.
