Öğe An investigation of financial literacy, money ethics and time preferences among college students A structural equation model(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2019) Aydin, Asli Elif; Selcuk, Elif AkbenPurpose - Financial literacy has a strong influence on financial well-being, and it is a concept especially important for college students who start to develop their financial habits. The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between financial literacy, money attitudes and time preferences among Turkish university students. Design/methodology/approach - Data were collected from 1,443 university students from 14 campuses in Turkey. Structural equation modeling methodology is employed to test the hypotheses. Findings - The results suggest that students with higher financial knowledge scores have more favorable financial attitudes and exhibit more desirable financial behaviors. It is also demonstrated that financial attitude is positively related to financial behavior. Furthermore, a significant and negative relationship between the affective dimension of the money ethic construct and financial behavior is found. In contrast, the relationship between the behavioral dimension of money ethic and financial behavior is positive. It is further demonstrated that a present orientation leads to more negative financial attitudes. Originality/value - This study will reveal the interrelationships among dimensions of financial literacy, money ethics and time preferences in an emerging economy with a relatively little experience with formal financial systems and unstable macroeconomic conditions.Öğe An investigation of tipping behavior as a major component in service economy: The case of taxi tipping(Elsevier Science Inc, 2019) Aydin, Asli Elif; Acun, YukselTipping is considered a thought-provoking economic practice since several factors have a role in determining the amount of tip that is left. This study aims to gain an in-depth understanding of tipping conduct within taxi industry. Initially a review of research on determinants of tipping is made. The particulars of tipping in taxi domain are scrutinized using real observations of 1482 taxi rides. The impact of factors that relate to the size of the taxi fare, interaction between the customer and the driver, status seeking, and gender are analyzed. It is found that total distance traveled during the taxi ride, making conversation with the customer, type of the taxi cab, customers' clothing style, customers' chosen seat and customers' gender exert a significant influence on tipping behavior.Öğe Psychological and demographic factors influencing responsible credit card debt payment(Palgrave Macmillan Ltd, 2022) Aydin, Asli ElifThe objective of this study is to examine whether individuals' level of time preference, materialism, risk-taking, optimism, and intuitiveness along with their demographic characteristics influence their credit card debt payments. Survey data from 320 credit card users are analyzed using structural equation modeling. The findings of the study reveal that optimism, intuitiveness, and materialism have a significant effect on handling credit card debt responsibly. Moreover, perceived income adequacy and having a child also influence credit card payment behavior.Öğe Ready or Not, Here It Comes: A Model of Perceived Financial Preparedness for Retirement(Springer/Plenum Publishers, 2021) Akben-Selcuk, Elif; Aydin, Asli ElifThis study develops and tests a model of the predictors of financial preparedness for retirement using retirement planning knowledge and attitude as mediators. The study also compares the model across groups that choose to opt out or stay after being automatically enrolled in the private pension system. Structural equation modeling methodology is used to test the relationships between constructs using data from 600 employees (333 men, 267 women; M age = 30.12 years, SD = 8.39) from workplaces preparing to initiate automatic enrollment into the private pension system in Turkey. It is shown that both parental influence and life satisfaction are positively related to perceived financial preparedness for retirement. In contrast, pessimistic future economic perspectives have a negative effect on perceived financial preparedness for retirement. Moreover, the findings reveal a positive impact of retirement planning attitude and a negative impact of retirement planning knowledge on perceived financial preparedness. Mediating roles of retirement planning knowledge and attitude are determined. Path differences between those who opt out and those who stay enrolled in the private pension system are demonstrated. The study makes an original contribution by showing the impact of consumers' current life satisfaction and future economic perspectives on financial preparedness for retirement. Given that retirement and financial planning studies have generally been conducted in developed countries, research investigating the predictors of financial preparedness for retirement in emerging countries remains scarce. Moreover, this study is novel in that, unlike previous works, it considers mediating factors. Finally, a further contribution is made by examining differences in the model between individuals who choose to stay within the private pension system and those who choose to opt out.Öğe Understanding food waste behavior: The role of morals, habits and knowledge(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2021) Aydin, Asli Elif; Yildirim, PinarFood waste has been receiving much scholarly attention from the academic domain, non-profit organizations and governments as the environmental damages and financial losses it causes increase each day, prompting the decision-makers to take preventive measures. Most of the food waste occurs at the household-level, so understanding the causes of consumer-generated food waste will be more useful for prevention. This study aims to investigate both direct and indirect effects of consumers' moral attitudes, knowledge of food conservation, eating habits, and shopping habits on food waste behavior. Structural equation modeling is employed to survey data gathered from 328 participants in Turkey. The results of the study reveal that moral attitudes have a direct effect on food waste behavior, eating habits, shopping habits, and knowledge of food conservation. Furthermore, shopping habits are shown to have a significant impact on food waste behavior. The analysis also provides evidence of indirect effects such that shopping habits mediate the relationship between moral attitudes and food waste behavior along with the relationship between knowledge of food conservation and food waste behavior. Moreover, the relationship between moral attitudes and shopping habits is mediated by knowledge of food conservation. The results demonstrate that moral attitudes and shopping habits are two important determinants of food waste. When individuals believe throwing away food is wrong and doesn't match with their self-image, the amount of food they waste decreases. Also, individuals who shop responsibly, and buy as much as they need, report less food waste. Efforts that aim to reduce food waste in households should focus on fostering strong moral attitudes against food waste and warning consumers about the negative consequences of excessive shopping.
