A comparative and oral history of foster daughters from Late Ottomans to Early Republicans: Daughters or servants

Abstract

Günümüzün koruyucu aile programı ve evlat edindirme pratiklerinin aksine, geçmişte evlat edinilen kız çocuklarının hane içinde ev işlerine yardımcı olarak kullanılmaları yaygın bir pratikti. Osmanlı'da, yine hane içini ilgilendiren bir kurum olan kölelikle paralel bir şekilde hem çocuk köleler hem de besleme olarak adlandırılan evlatlık kız çocukları ev işlerine yardımcı olmak üzere alınıyordu. Neredeyse bir istihdam olarak görülebilecek bu karşılıklı alışverişte kız çocuklarının tek faydası ise bakımlarının sağlanmasıydı. Osmanlı'da köleliğin kademeli olarak kaldırılması ile art arda yaşanan savaşlar, kıtlık ve yoksulluk, çocuk emeğini daha görünür kıldı. İmparatorluğun yıkılıp yerine yeni bir cumhuriyetin kurulmasıyla gelen modernleşme süreci kölelik kurumunu ortadan kaldırsa da kölelik benzeri alışkanlıklar uzun yıllar farklı adlar altında sürmeye devam etti. Bu çalışma, bir başka aileye evlat edindirilen ancak evlatlık bulunduğu ailede ev içi emeğinden faydalanılan kız çocuklarının hikayesini görünür kılmayı amaçlıyor. Tez kapsamında bu tecrübeyi doğrudan yaşamış ya da yakından şahit olmuş beş kadınla sözlü tarih görüşmesi gerçekleştirildi. Yapılan görüşmeler Osmanlı'da kölelik, beslemelik ve evlatlık kurumlarının tarihsel değişimi ve dönüşümü kapsamında incelendi; benzer ve farklı yönleri ele alındı. Ayrıca aile ve çocukluk kavramının tarihsel ve sosyolojik olarak nasıl dönüştüğü ile kadın emeğinin nasıl şekillendiğinin evlatlıkların tecrübelerindeki etkisi incelendi.In contrast to contemporary foster care programs and adoption practices, the use of adopted girls as providers of domestic labor within households was a widespread practice in the past. In the Ottoman Empire, parallel to the institution of slavery—another household-centered system—both child slaves and foster girls, commonly referred to as besleme, were taken into households primarily to assist with domestic work. In this reciprocal arrangement, which can be understood as a form of employment, the sole benefit afforded to these girls was the provision of basic care and maintenance. The gradual abolition of slavery in the Ottoman Empire, combined with successive wars, famine, and widespread poverty, rendered child labor increasingly visible. Although the modernization process that accompanied the collapse of the Empire and the establishment of the Republic formally abolished slavery, slavery-like practices persisted for many years under different names. This study aims to make visible the experiences of girls who were placed with another family under the status of adoption or fostering, yet whose domestic labor was systematically utilized within their adoptive households. Within the scope of the thesis, oral history interviews were conducted with five women who either directly experienced this practice or closely witnessed it. These interviews are analyzed within the framework of the historical transformation of slavery, fosterage, and adoption in the Ottoman context, highlighting both continuities and ruptures among these institutions. Additionally, the study examines how the historical and sociological transformation of the concepts of family and childhood, as well as the shaping of women's labor, influenced the lived experiences of adopted girls.
