Chemically buffed: A qualitative exploration of body image and anabolic steroid use among queer men in Türkiye

Abstract

Kas yapma süreci içerdiği psikososyal anlamlar bakımından karmaşık bir süreçtir. Bu konuyu araştıran birçok çalışma kaslı bir bedenin erkekler için sağladığı sosyal sermayei incelemiştir. Ancak, bu liteteratür cinsel kimliğin etkisini çoğu zaman keşfetmez. Bu kompleks tabloya queer kimlikler açısından bakmak konuyu derinlemesine bir şekilde ele almayı gerektirir. Bu yüzden, bu çalışma kaslanmak için egzersiz yapan queer erkeklerin deneyimine odaklanır ve Türkiye bağlamında şu sorulara cevap arar: a) Kas yapan queer erkekler bedenlerini nasıl görür? b) Steroid kullanımıa dair tutumları nedir? c) Queer kimlik beden imgesi ve steroid kullanımında nasıl bir rol oynar? Bunun için nitel bir araştırma yöntemi benimsenmiştir. Sekiz queer erkek ile yarı yapılandırılmış bireysel görüşmeler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Tematik analizin sonuçları üç ana tema ortaya çıkarmıştır. Bu temalar "Sermaye Olarak Kaslı Beden", "İdeal Erkek Bedenine Doğru", "Duygulanım Alanı Olarak Spor Salonu" olmuştur. Bulgulara göre, queer erkekler kaslanmayı sosyal ve cinsel anlamda bir sermaye birikimi olarak görmüştür. Ancak, bu birikimin onlar için bazı bedelleri olmuştur. Bu erkeklerin idealler ve normlarla bir çeşit"pazarlık" yapmaları gerekmiştir ve bu da onların egzersiz rutinleri ya da steroid kullanımına yönelik tutumlarını etkilemiştir. Buna ek olarak bulgular tıpkı kaslanmanın kendisi gibi, kaslanmanın yaşandığı yerin de, yani spor salonlarının da, duygusal açıdan kompleks bir yapıda olduğunu göstermiştir. Kaslı bir bedene sahip olmak cisheteroseksüeller ve queer erkekler için benzer anlamlar ifade etse de hem spor salonu hem kas yapmanın queer kimlikler için özgün bir anlamı da vardır. Bu bulgular ile paralel klinik ve koruyucu-önleyici ruh sağlığı çalışmaları için öneriler paylaşılmıştır.The process of muscularization is not a straightforward process due to its own psychosocial significance. Many studies investigating this topic reveal how the muscular body provides social capital for men. However, this literature often does not explore the effect of sexual identity. The inclusion of queer identity into this complex portrayal necessitates a deeper exploration. Thus, this study aims to understand the experiences of queer men who exercise for muscle growth and to answer the following research questions in Türkiye: a) How do queer men who build muscle view their bodies? b) What are their attitudes toward steroid use? c) What role does being queer play in their body image and attitudes toward steroid use? For this reason, a qualitative research method was employed, and semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with 8 queer men. Thematic analysis revealed three main themes which were "Muscular Body as Capital", "Navigation through the Ideal Masculine Body," and "Gym as a Place of Affectivity". Results indicated that queer men conceptualize muscularity as way of capital accumulation in terms of social and sexual relations. However, this accumulation engendered costs in these men's lives. They needed to negotiate norms and ideals, which in turn affected their health behaviors including exercise regimen and attitudes towards steroids. Moreover, these results also showed that like the muscularization process, the space where it takes place, namely gyms, is also in a complex structure in terms of its emotional significance. Although having a muscular body means similar things to wee heterosexuals and queer men, both the gym and muscularity also have a unique meaning for queer identities. Clinical suggestions and mental health implications parallel to these findings were discussed.
