The Changing Cinematographic Expression Through Digitalization: A Case Study of The End of Time Documentary Film

Abstract

This article focuses on how cinematographic expression in documentary filmmaking has been transformed by the effect of digitalization. The aim of the study is to analyze how digitalization has changed the documentary film narrative, focusing on Peter Mettler's award-winning documentary The End of Time (2012). Sample selection was decided by the fact that the production has an experimental visual narrative that combines different techniques using digital tools. The film is examined using the cinematographic analysis method based on Gilles Deleuze's film theory. The examination was conducted in the following categories: framing, shooting angles, light, editing, and sound. As a result of the analysis, it is determined that, based on the narrative structure of the film that questions the concept of time, a different visual storytelling language is preferred by choosing an immersive and thought-based approach that stimulates the audience’s senses with digital techniques such as time lapse, negative space, slow motion, long exposure, and superimposed transitions. The decision to use the Mixxa HD video mixer in the Touchdesigner program for a sequence of the production ensures that real-time sound and visual design harmony is included in the editing process. Thus, with the opportunities provided by digitalization, the documentary creates its story in accordance with Deleuze's definition of crystal-images. Therefore, it can be stated that the documentary film The End of Time is an example that successfully demonstrates the contribution of digital tools in effective cinematographic expression. The study aims to contribute to the field by revealing the creative opportunities provided by digital technologies in creating effective cinematography (intellectually) in documentary filmmaking.Bu makale, belgesel film yapımında sinematografik anlatımın dijitalleşme olgusuyla nasıl dönüştüğüne odaklanmaktadır. Çalışmanın amacı, dijitalleşmenin belgesel film anlatısını ne şekilde değiştirdiğini Peter Mettler'in ödüllü The End of Time (2012) belgesel filmi üzerinden analiz etmektir. Örneklem seçiminde, yapımın dijital araçlar kullanarak farklı teknikleri deneysel biçimde birleştiren bir görsel anlatıya sahip olması etkili olmuştur. Yapım, Gilles Deleuze'un sinematografik imge kuramı temelinde, sinematografik analiz yöntemi kullanılarak incelenmektedir. Yöntem altında inceleme başlıkları, çerçeveleme, çekim ölçekleri, ışık, kurgu ve ses olarak kategorilendirilmektedir. Yapılan analiz sonucunda; filmin zaman kavramını farklı bakış açılarıyla sorgulayan anlatı yapısı temelinde, time lapse, negatif alan kullanımı, slow motion, uzun pozlama, bindirme geçişler gibi dijital tekniklerle izleyicinin duyularını harekete geçiren sürükleyici ve düşünceye dayalı bir yaklaşımı tercih ederek farklı bir görsel anlatım dili oluşturduğu tespit edilmektedir. Touchdesigner programı içinde yer alan Mixxa HD video karıştırıcısının yapımın bir sekansında kullanılma tercihi ise, gerçek zamanlı ses ve görsel tasarım uyumunun kurgu sürecine dahil edilmesini sağlamaktadır. Böylece dijitalleşmenin sağladığı olanaklarla anlatı, Deleuze'ün kristal imge tanımına uygun biçimde oluşturulmaktadır. Bu nedenle The End of Time belgesel filminin, etkili sinematografik anlatımda dijital araçların katkısını başarıyla ortaya koyan bir örnek olduğu ifade edilebilmektedir. Çalışma, dijital teknolojilerin (düşünsel biçimde) etkili bir belgesel sinematografisi oluşturmada sağladığı yaratıcı olanakları ortaya koyarak alana katkı sunmayı hedeflemektedir.
