dc.description.abstractBu tez öncelikle ve her şeyden çok, Herman Melville'in "Katip Bartleby" öyküsündeki Bartleby hakkındadır. Giorgio Agamben için Bartleby ne sıradan bir katip ne de sıradan bir edebi karakterdir; kopyalamayı ve yazmayı bırakarak, eylememe potansiyelinin mükemmel örneğini oluşturur. Bir metafizik terimi olarak potansiyelliği Aristoteles'e kadar geri götüren tez, Agamben'in potansiyellik ve potansiyelsizlik kavramlarını Katip Bartleby bağlamında inceler. Tüm potansiyeller eyleme mi götürür? Eylemde "bulunmamayı tercih eden" bir varlığın potansiyelini felsefi bir temelde nasıl ele alabiliriz? Ve böyle bir varlığın ontolojik konumu ne olabilir? Agamben'in kapsamlı ve derin Bartleby yorumu, bu gibi sorulara benzersiz yanıtlar sunarken, bizzat zengin bir potansiyeli ortaya koyar: diğer birçok kavramın yanı sıra etik, özgünlük, nedensellik ve yaratım kavramlarına dikkat çeker. Ve bizi şu soruyla baş başa bırakır: Bartleby, Agamben'in deyimiyle "yazmama potansiyelini yazarak" kendini neyden kurtarmakta ve hangi ontolojik düzlemde var etmektedir? Tez, Agamben'in Bartleby yorumu üzerinden, bahsi geçen felsefi kavramlar arasındaki belirli bağlantılara işaret etmek suretiyle, okuyucuları bizzat Yaradılışın potansiyeli etrafındaki kavramsallaştırmaları yeniden değerlendirmeye ve bir "varlığın" benimseyebileceği potansiyel yaşama hallerini yeniden düşünmeye davet etmektedir.
dc.description.abstractThis thesis is first and foremost about Bartleby of Herman Melville's story "Bartleby the Scrivener". For Giorgio Agamben, Bartleby is neither an ordinary scrivener nor an ordinary literary character; by ceasing to copy and write, he becomes the ultimate example of the notion potentiality-not-to. Tracing back the metaphysical term potentiality to Aristotle, the thesis examines Agamben's concepts of potentiality and impotentiality within the specific context of Bartleby the Scrivener. Do all potentialities lead to actions? On a philosophical basis, how can we deal with the potentiality of a being who "would prefer not to act"? And what would his ontological position be? While providing unique answers to such questions, Agamben's thorough and profound discussion of Bartleby reveals a rich potentiality itself: it calls attention to ethics, authenticity, causality and creation, among many other concepts. And it leaves us with the following question: What does Bartleby save himself from and on what ontological ground does he exist through "writing his potentiality not-to write" in Agamben's terms? By pointing out specific connections between the aforementioned philosophical notions through Agamben's interpretation of Bartleby, the thesis invites the readers to re-evaluate their conceptualizations around the potentiality of Creation itself and rethink the potential states of "living" a creature can adopt.
