Ruin, time and being: Dwelling in the ruin through walking in sagalassos

Abstract

Bu tez, antik harabelerin deneyimlenmesine ilişkin olağan, alışılagelmiş yaklaşımları sorgulayarak, bedensel, duyusal ve fenomenolojik bir çerçeveye dayanan alternatif bir okuma ortaya koymaktadır. Harabeleri bilimsel belgelenmenin durağan nesneleri ya da kültürel miras turizminin metalaştırılmış öğeleri olarak ele almak yerine, bu çalışma harabeleri insan deneyiminin etkin bileşenleri olarak görmektedir. Tez, harabelerin bedenle kurulan ilişki, zamansallık ve malzemenin bozunum koşulları aracılığıyla şekillenen değişken bir varlığa sahip olduğunu ileri sürmektedir. Bu doğrultuda 'yıkıntılılık' (ruinhood) kavramı önerilerek, harabenin geçmişe ait sabit bir kalıntı değil; algı, hafıza ve bedensel deneyimle sürekli ortaya çıkan etkisel bir durum olduğu savunmaktadır. Araştırma, felsefi ve mimari düşünceye dayanan hermenötik ve fenomenolojik bir yöntem benimsemektedir. Yer ile hemhâl olma hâli/yerleşiklik (dwelling), bedenlenmiş algı ve çok duyulu mekânsal deneyim kavramları, hareketi, özellikle yürümeyi epistemik ve deneyimsel bir araç olarak konumlandırmaktadır. Kuramsal çerçeve ile mekân arasındaki ilişkiyi kurmak amacıyla çalışma, Dimitris Pikionis'in Atina Akropolü çevresindeki peyzaj düzenlemelerini ele almaktadır. Pikionis'in yaklaşımı, sezgisel, bedensel ve yorumlayıcı bir mekânsal karşılaşmayı tanımlamak üzere tezde 'Pikionistik deneyim' olarak adlandırılan kavramsal yapıya ilham vermektedir. Araştırmanın yere özgü boyutu ise Türkiye'nin güneybatısında yer alan antik Sagalassos kentinde gerçekleştirilen saha gözlemlerine dayanır. Kentin kademeli topografyası, Helenistik–Roma dönemine uzanan hibrit kent dokusu ve bütüncül mekânsal karakteri, harabelerle yürüyerek, duyarak ve mekânı katmanlarıyla deneyimleyerek kurulan çağdaş karşılaşmaları incelemek için güçlü bir zemin sunmaktadır. Sonuç olarak bu tez, harabeye ilişkin kesin ve tekil bir tanım öne sürmek yerine, harabî ortamlarda deneyimin parçalı, zamansal ve yorumlayıcı doğasını görünür kılmayı amaçlamaktadır. Harabeleri beden aracılığıyla yeniden düşünerek, mimarlık ve miras çalışmaları alanındaki söyleme katkı sağlar ve antik mekânları durağan kalıntılardan ziyade varoluşsal deneyim alanları olarak kavramsallaştırır.This thesis examines the experience of ancient ruins by proposing an alternative framework grounded in embodied, sensory, and phenomenological approach. Instead of treating ruins as static objects of scientific documentation or as commodified attractions of heritage tourism, this thesis sees them as active participants in human experience. The study argues that ruins possess an evolving presence shaped through bodily engagement, temporality, and the material conditions of decay. To articulate this, the concept of 'ruinhood' is introduced, defining the ruin not as a fixed remnant of the past but as an ongoing and affective condition that emerges through perception, memory, and bodily experiences. Methodologically, the research employs a hermeneutic and phenomenological approach informed by philosophical and architectural backbone. Theoretical grounding is established through ontological ideas of dwelling, embodied perception, and multisensory engagement, which position movement, particularly walking as an epistemic and experiential tool. To bridge theory and place, the study refers to the architectural work of Dimitris Pikionis, whose interventions around the Acropolis exemplify bodily rhythm and cultural layering. His approach informs the notion of the 'Pikionastic experience', describing intuitive and embodied modes of engaging with ruinous landscapes. The site-specific dimension of the research is grounded in field observations at Sagalassos, an ancient city in southwestern Türkiye. Its terraced topography, hybrid Hellenistic–Roman urban fabric, and immersive spatial character provide a fertile ground for examining how walking, sensing, and dwelling shape contemporary encounters with ruins. Ultimately, this thesis does not aim to formulate a final definition of the ruin but to reveal the fragmented, temporal, and interpretive qualities inherent in experiencing ruinous environments. By reframing ruins through embodied interaction and phenomenological inquiry, the research contributes to architectural discourse in heritage studies and offers an alternative understanding of ancient sites as dynamic fields of being rather than static remnants of the past.
