A Foucaldian interpretation of the Christian transformation of Plato's 'care of the self' as 'ethos' and 'parrhesia'

Abstract

Yunan Antik Çağ'ını ve Hıristiyanlık kendilik kaygısını içeren bu çalışmada Yunan Antik Çağ'ının özgür bireyinin, Hıristiyanlık dini ediminde ahlak öznesine dönüşümü üzerinde durulmuştur. Platon'un bilgi ve siyaset felsefesinin, Yunan Antik Çağ'ının toplumsal yaşamını, site yönetimini ve en önemlisi site vatandaşının bireyselliğini hangi amaçsallık doğrultusunda ele aldığının değerlendirmesi yapılmıştır. Platon ve Antik Yunan değerlerinin, Hıristiyanlık anlayışıyla birlikte içeriğinin boşaltılmasını Michel Foucault'un yapmış olduğu çözümlemelerle incelenmeye çalışılmıştır. Bu çalışmada asıl sorunsalı oluşturan Yunan Antik Çağı'nın toplum yaşam değerleri ve Hıristiyanlık dini ediminde var olan toplumsal normların karşılaştırılmasının yapılmasıdır. Hıristiyanlıkla birlikte oluşan toplumsal normlar Antik Yunan kültüründen nasıl yararlanmıştır? Kendi içerisinde ne tür kopmalar ve değişimler geçirmiştir? Yaşamın hangi alanlarını ve kimleri kapsamaktadır? Yönetim ile ne tür bir ilişki içindedir? Sorularına Platon ve Foucault'un çalışma ve metinleri kapsamında cevaplar aranıp, çözümlemeler yapılmıştır. Çalışmada Platon ve Michel Foucault'un kendi metinlerinin yanı sıra gereken yerlerde adı geçen filozofların eserleri de incelenmiş ve ele alınan dönemlere ışık tutan diğer yardımcı kaynaklardan da yararlanılmıştır.In this study, which includes the Ancient Greek Age and the Christian "care of the self", the transformation of the free individual of the Ancient Greek Age into a moral subject in the religious act of Christianity is examined. The purpose in terms of which Plato's philosophy of knowledge and politics deals with the social life of the Ancient Greek Age, the government of the city and most importantly the individuality of the citizens of the city has been evaluated. It has been tried to examine the emptying of the content of Plato and Ancient Greek values together with the understanding of Christianity with the analyses made by Michel Foucault. In this study, the main problematic is the comparison of the social life values of the Ancient Greek Age and the social norms existing in the Christian religious act. Answers to the questions of "How did the social norms that emerged with Christianity benefit from Ancient Greek culture? What kind of ruptures and changes has it undergone within itself? What areas of life and whom does it cover? What kind of relationship does it have with government?" were sought within the scope of the works and texts of Plato and Foucault. In the study, besides the texts of Plato and Michel Foucault, the works of the mentioned philosophers were also examined where necessary, and other auxiliary sources that shed light on the eras discussed were also used.
