Associations of gender and parental factors with adolescent obesity awareness: a cross-sectional study
(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2026) Saglam, Gulsah; Ozlu Karahan, Tugce; Seven Avuk, Hande
Purpose-Childhood obesity, the incidence of which is increasing day by day, is a significant public health problem. Noncommunicable diseases increase with the increase in obesity. On the other hand, obesity awareness levels in children gain importance in the fight against obesity by contributing to a change in behavior. This study aimed to examine the level of obesity awareness in adolescents and identify its associated factors. Design/methodology/approach-The study included 372 adolescents aged 10-14 years. The energy and nutrient intakes of the adolescents were recorded by the 24-h recall method. Obesity awareness status was obtained using the Obesity Awareness Scale (OAS). Findings-It was determined that 40.6% of the participants were overweight or obese, and this rate was 36.1 and 46.1% for females and males, respectively (p = 0.092). Obesity and physical activity awareness scores and general scores of female adolescents were found to be significantly higher than those of male adolescents (p < 0.05), except for the nutrition sub-factor (p = 0.314). In multivariate linear regression analysis, maternal employment status (beta = -1.578, p = 0.045) and gender (beta = 2.066, p = 0.011) were variables significantly associated with obesity awareness. Originality/value-Increasing obesity awareness is critical in the fight against obesity in childhood and adolescence. Our results indicate that maternal factors and gender show significant associations with adolescents' obesity awareness. Parents have a significant role in the fight against obesity, and their education level should be increased; awareness projects should be implemented.

Microbiota awareness of Turkish adults is associated with plant-based dietary patterns
(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2025) Kenger, Emre Batuhan; Ozlu Karahan, Tugce; Bayram, Hatice Merve; Ozturkcan, Seyfettin Arda
Purpose- Knowledge of microbiota and how it affects health can lead individuals to healthier lifestyle choices, such as dietary choices. The purpose of this study was to assess microbiota awareness and investigate its impact on plant-based dietary patterns, which are known to have proven benefits for both the environment and human health. In this study, the authors hypothesized that the microbiota awareness of Turkish adults may affect plant-based dietary patterns. Design/methodology/approach- A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,676 adults (63.8% women; 27.8 +/- 13.0 years) in Turkey between March and May 2023. Data were collected using an online questionnaire that included demographic variables, anthropometric measurements, a validated microbiota awareness scale (64.7 +/- 16.8) and a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). A plant-based diet index (PDI), a healthy plant-based diet index (hPDI) and an unhealthy plant-based diet index (uPDI) were derived from dietary assessments by a validated semi-quantitative FFQ. Findings- Females had significantly higher microbiota awareness scores than males (67.3 +/- 15.7 vs 60.1 +/- 17.7, p = 0.001). Microbiota awareness scores of individuals in the second tertile (65.9 +/- 15.9) were significantly higher than those in the third tertile of uPDI (59.3 +/- 17.9) (p < 0.05). For PDI and hPDI scores, microbiota awareness scores of individuals in the first tertile were significantly lower than in the third tertile. Multivariate linear regression analyses revealed that microbiota awareness was an independent predictor for PDI (beta = 0.035, p = 0.002), hPDI (beta = 0.141, p = 0.001) and uPDI (beta = -0.158, p < 0.001). Originality/value- Considering that awareness of microbiota may result in shifting lifestyle choices such as dietary patterns, further studies are needed to determine the relationship between microbiota awareness and PDI.

Processed Food Consumption Based on the NOVA Classification Is Associated With Elevated Cardiometabolic Risk in Turkish Adults
(John Wiley and Sons Inc, 2025) Ozkan, Irem; Ozlu Karahan, Tugce; Seven Avuk, Hande
The global rise in ultra-processed food consumption is associated with increased prevalence of cardiometabolic disorders such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between processed food intake and cardiometabolic risk factors among adults in Türkiye. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 171 adults aged 18–65 years attending an internal medicine outpatient clinic between March and April 2024. Data collected included dietary habits, physical activity levels, anthropometric measurements, and biochemical parameters. Processed food intake was classified according to the NOVA system and divided into tertiles. Cardiometabolic risk was assessed using the Framingham risk score. The median age was 44.0 (29.0–52.0) years; 67.9% were female. Participants in the T2 tertile with the highest processed food intake had a higher median waist/hip ratio [0.88; (0.82–0.90)] compared to those in the lowest tertile (T1) [0.82 (0.76–0.88); p = 0.003]. Similarly, the median Framingham risk score was higher in the highest tertile of T2 [11.0; (5.0–15.0)] compared to those in the lowest tertile [5.0; (?1.0–9.5); p < 0.001]. These differences suggest a positive correlation between processed food intake and cardiometabolic risk. Increased processed food consumption is associated with higher obesity and cardiometabolic risk among Turkish adults. Promoting healthy dietary habits and reducing processed food intake could have significant public health benefits. Future longitudinal studies with larger samples are needed to confirm these findings and clarify causality. Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT06996262. © 2025 The Author(s). What's in your card? The impact of online food delivery apps on depression and eating behaviors
(Frontiers Media Sa, 2025) Ozlu Karahan, Tugce; Cakmakci, Dila; Kurtoglu, Eylul; Kul, Zeynep; Kidan, Irem Sevim; Kenger, Emre Batuhan
Introduction Digitalization, through smartphones and online platforms, has become deeply embedded in daily life, beginning to exert significant effects on eating habits and psychological health. Online food delivery (OFD) applications (app) provide easy access to fast food and processed products, exposing individuals to a constant digital food environment. Examining the relationship of these applications with eating behaviors and conditions such as depression is particularly important in the context of increasing mental health problems among young adults. This study aims to examine the relationship between the frequency of use of OFD apps and user attitudes toward these apps, with depression level and eating behaviors in young adults. Methods Participants' demographic information, frequency of use of OFD apps, and attitudes toward these apps were determined by questionnaire questions; depression status was assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory; and eating behaviors were assessed using the Three-Factor Eating Scale (TFEQ-R21).Results A total of 383 young adults aged 18-35 years participated in our study. The group with the lowest frequency of OFD apps use (21.2 +/- 0.4) had significantly lower uncontrolled eating scores than the other groups (23.4 +/- 0.7 and 23.3 +/- 0.6; p = 0.005). In addition, a significant decrease in cognitive restraint levels was observed as the frequency of OFD apps use increased (p = 0.031). In addition, depression scores of individuals with more OFD apps (4-6) on their phones (14.1 +/- 1.3) were found to be higher than those of individuals who did not use any apps (8.8 +/- 1.4; p = 0.025).Discussion The findings of our study suggest that the digital food environment can be a determinant not only of individuals' physical health but also of their psychological health and behavioral eating habits.
