Öğe Factors facilitating child abuse in sports in Turkey: The case of elite athletes(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2020) Cetin, Erdal; Hacisoftaoglu, IlknurThis study analyzed child abuse practices and the factors facilitating abuse in sports organizations in Turkey. It used qualitative research methods through individual interviews in order to understand the case experientially and in-depth from various perspectives. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with 39 individuals older than 18 years of age who had either previously done or were currently involved in an individual sport. The interviews retrospectively focused on the abuse practices experienced by the participants during their childhood and the factors facilitating these practices. Furthermore, this piece of research utilized content analysis of the interview data and explored the factors leading to abuse practices in sports under four main themes. Thus it was concluded that the most important factors leading to child abuse in sports include types of relationships built in sports fields; sociological factors outside the sport field; sports-specific locations and problems experienced in child protection in Turkey.Öğe 'There is nothing else to do!': the impact of football-based sport for development programs in under-resourced areas(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2022) Acikgoz, Selcuk; Haudenhuyse, Reinhard; Hacisoftaoglu, IlknurThe capacity of sport to contribute to broader social-inclusive and developmental outcomes is widely addressed in Sport for Development (SfD) literature. However, the hegemonic impact of football, the most-chosen activity in SfD programs, remains under-researched. We used the Capability Approach and Hegemony Theory as analytical lenses to explore the impact of football-based SfD programs on improving young people's lives. In particular, we investigate two programs in under-resourced areas in Turkey. We interviewed various stakeholders (participants, coordinators, and participant's parents), and conducted field visits and observations. Our findings highlight the contradictions of SfD programs, wherein challenges and opportunities are intertwined and do not appear to lead to clear, identifiable outcomes. While the activities embody some values that can lead to new opportunities, we argue that the dominance of football and the way it is used can have a neutralizing impact on the capabilities gained through SfD programs.
