A case study of excess/access media: Simultaneous construction of novel and museum in the museum of innocence

This thesis aims to analyze the foundational relationship between the novel and the museum, that lies beneath Orhan Pamuk’s latest novel The Museum of Innocence. Questioning the necessity and function of one of the two media that constitute the project, automatically gives way to the questioning of the other. Therefore, in thw context of The Museum of Innocence posing the question of why is there a museum brings up the question of why is there a novel. The structure that is responsible for this relationship between these questions, also situates the project within the tension between the real and the fictititous. By analyzing several central objects that appear in both the novel and the museum, this thesis aims to map out the ways in which the two media – the novel and the museum – collaborate with, construct, dictate, or restrict eachother.
