Öğe Addendum: Measurement and QCD analysis of double-differential inclusive jet cross sections in proton-proton collisions at ?s=13 TeV(Springer, 2022) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.; Del Valle, A. EscalanteThe QCD analysis at NNLO is repeated by using the NNLO interpolation grids for the double-differential inclusive jet cross section [1], which were released after the journal publication of the original analysis. The NNLOJET calculation used to derive these grids is based on the leading-colour and leading-flavour-number approximation and does not include the most recent subleading colour contributions. However, these contributions were reported in ref. [2] to be very small in inclusive jet production, in particular for a jet size of R = 0.7. The grids also contain an estimate of the numerical integration uncertainty of around 1% or less. To account for point-to-point fluctuations, this uncertainty, after consultation with the authors of NNLOJET, has been increased by a factor of two; however, its impact in the fit is negligible. A comparison of the measurement with predictions using various PDFs is shown in figure 1. Although the PDF parametrisation remains identical, higher precision in PDF and QCD parameters is expected by using NNLO grids consistently in the QCD analysis. These new results supersede those obtained by using the k-factor technique.Öğe Combined searches for the production of supersymmetric top quark partners in proton-proton collisions at ?s=13 TeV(Springer, 2021) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. EscalanteA combination of searches for top squark pair production using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment, is presented. Signatures with at least 2 jets and large missing transverse momentum are categorized into events with 0, 1, or 2 leptons. New results for regions of parameter space where the kinematical properties of top squark pair production and top quark pair production are very similar are presented. Depending on themodel, the combined result excludes a top squarkmass up to 1325 GeV for amassless neutralino, and a neutralinomass up to 700 GeV for a top squarkmass of 1150 GeV. Top squarks with masses from 145 to 295 GeV, for neutralino masses from 0 to 100 GeV, with a mass difference between the top squark and the neutralino in a window of 30 GeV around the mass of the top quark, are excluded for the first time with CMS data. The results of theses searches are also interpreted in an alternative signal model of dark matter production via a spin-0 mediator in association with a top quark pair. Upper limits are set on the cross section for mediator particle masses of up to 420 GeV.Öğe Constraints on anomalous Higgs boson couplings to vector bosons and fermions in its production and decay using the four-lepton final state(Amer Physical Soc, 2021) Sirunyan, A. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.Studies of CP violation and anomalous couplings of the Higgs boson to vector bosons and fermions are presented. The data were acquired by the CMS experiment at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1) at a proton-proton collision energy of 13 TeV. The kinematic effects in the Higgs boson's four-lepton decay H -> 4l and its production in association with two jets, a vector boson, or top quarks are analyzed, using a full detector simulation and matrix element techniques to identify the production mechanisms and to increase sensitivity to the tensor structure of the Higgs boson interactions. A simultaneous measurement is performed of up to five Higgs boson couplings to electroweak vector bosons (HVV), two couplings to gluons (Hgg), and two couplings to top quarks (Htt). The CP measurement in the Htt interaction is combined with the recent measurement in the H -> gamma gamma channel. The results are presented in the framework of anomalous couplings and are also interpreted in the framework of effective field theory, including the first study of CP properties of the Htt and effective Hgg couplings from a simultaneous analysis of the gluon fusion and top-associated processes. The results are consistent with the standard model of particle physics.Öğe Constraints on the Initial State of Pb-Pb Collisions via Measurements of Z-Boson Yields and Azimuthal Anisotropy at ?sNN=5.02 TeV(Amer Physical Soc, 2021) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Bergauer, T.; Dragicevic, M.; Ero, J.The CMS experiment at the LHC has measured the differential cross sections of Z bosons decaying to pairs of leptons, as functions of transverse momentum and rapidity, in lead-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The measured Z boson elliptic azimuthal anisotropy coefficient is compatible with zero, showing that Z bosons do not experience significant final-state interactions in the medium produced in the collision. Yields of Z bosons are compared to Glauber model predictions and are found to deviate from these expectations in peripheral collisions, indicating the presence of initial collision geometry and centrality selection effects. The precision of the measurement allows, for the first time, for a data-driven determination of the nucleon-nucleon integrated luminosity as a function of lead-lead centrality, thereby eliminating the need for its estimation based on a Glauber model.Öğe Development and validation of HERWIG 7 tunes from CMS underlying-event measurements(Springer, 2021) Sirunyan, A. These parameters control the description of multiple-parton interactions (MPI) and colour reconnection in herwig 7, and are obtained from a fit to minimum-bias data collected by the CMS experiment at v s = 0.9, 7, and 13 TeV. The tunes are based on the NNPDF3.1 next-to-nextto-leading-order parton distribution function (PDF) set for the parton shower, and either a leading-order or next-to-nextto-leading-order PDF set for the simulation of MPI and the beam remnants. Predictions utilizing the tunes are produced for event shape observables in electron-positron collisions, and forminimum-bias, inclusive jet, top quark pair, and Zand Wboson events in proton-proton collisions, and are compared with data. Each of the new tunes describes the data at a reasonable level, and the tunes using a leading-order PDF for the simulation of MPI provide the best description of the data.Öğe Electron and photon reconstruction and identification with the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC(Iop Publishing Ltd, 2021) Sirunyan, A. Escalante; Fruehwirth, R.The performance is presented of the reconstruction and identification algorithms for electrons and photons with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The reported results are based on proton-proton collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and recorded in 2016-2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 136 fb(-1). Results obtained from lead-lead collision data collected at root S-NN = 5.02 TeV are also presented. Innovative techniques are used to reconstruct the electron and photon signals in the detector and to optimize the energy resolution. Events with electrons and photons in the final state are used to measure the energy resolution and energy scale uncertainty in the recorded events. The measured energy resolution for electrons produced in Z boson decays in proton-proton collision data ranges from 2 to 5%, depending on electron pseudorapidity and energy loss through bremsstrahlung in the detector material. The energy scale in the same range of energies is measured with an uncertainty smaller than 0.1 (0.3)% in the barrel (endcap) region in proton-proton collisions and better than 1(3)% in the barrel (endcap) region in heavy ion collisions. The timing resolution for electrons from Z boson decays with the full 2016-2018 proton-proton collision data set is measured to be 200 ps.Öğe Evidence for Top Quark Production in Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions(Amer Physical Soc, 2020) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Bergauer, T.; Dragicevic, M.; Ero, J.Ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions recreate in the laboratory the thermodynamical conditions prevailing in the early universe up to 10(-6) sec, thereby allowing the study of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), a state of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) matter with deconfined partons. The top quark, the heaviest elementary particle known, is accessible in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN LHC, and constitutes a novel probe of the QGP. Here, we report the first evidence for the production of top quarks in nucleus-nucleus collisions, using lead-lead collision data at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV recorded by the CMS experiment. Two methods are used to measure the cross section for top quark pair production (sigma(t (t) over bar)) via the selection of charged leptons (electrons or muons) and bottom quarks. One method relies on the leptonic information alone, and the second one exploits, in addition, the presence of bottom quarks. The measured cross sections, sigma(t (t) over bar) = 2.54(-0.74)(+0.84) and 2.03(-0.64)(+0.71) mu b, respectively, are compatible with expectations from scaled proton-proton data and QCD predictions.Öğe Evidence for WW/WZ vector boson scattering in the decay channel l?qq produced in association with two jets in proton-proton collisions at ?s=13TeV(Elsevier, 2022) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. EscalanteEvidence is reported for electroweak (EW) vector boson scattering in the decay channel l nu qq of two weak vector bosons WV(V = Wor Z), produced in association with two parton jets. The search uses a data set of proton-proton collisions at 13TeVcollected with the CMS detector during 2016-2018 with an integrated luminosity of 138fb(-1). Events are selected requiring one lepton (electron or muon), moderate missing transverse momentum, two jets with a large pseudorapidity separation and a large dijet invariant mass, and a signature consistent with the hadronic decay of a W/Zboson. The cross section is computed in a fiducial phase space defined at parton level requiring all parton transverse momenta p(T)> 10 GeVand at least one pair of outgoing partons with invariant mass mqq> 100 GeV. The measured and expected EW WVproduction cross sections are 1.90(-0.46)(+0.5)3 pb and 2.23(-0.11)(+0.08)(scale) +/- 0.05(PDF) pb, respectively, where PDF is the parton distribution function. The observed EW signal strength is mu EW= 0.85 +/- 0.12 (stat)(-0.17)(+0.19)(syst), corresponding to a signal significance of 4.4 standard deviations with 5.1 expected, and it is measured keeping the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) associated diboson production fixed to the standard model prediction. This is the first evidence of vector boson scattering in the l nu qq decay channel at LHC. The simultaneous measurement of the EW and QCD associated diboson production agrees with the standard model prediction. (C) 2022 The Author(s). M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Bergauer, T.; Dragicevic, M.; Ero, J.Jet production in lead-lead (PbPb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02TeV is studied with the CMS detector at the LHC, using PbPb and pp data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of 404 mu b(-1) and 27.4 pb(-1), respectively. Jets with different areas are reconstructed using the anti-k(T) algorithm by varying the distance parameter R. The measurements are performed using jets with transverse momenta (p(T)) greater than 200 GeV and in a pseudorapidity range of vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2. To reveal the medium modification of the jet spectra in PbPb collisions, the properly normalized ratio of spectra from PbPb and pp data is used to extract jet nuclear modification factors as functions of the PbPb collision centrality, p(T) and, for the first time, as a function of R up to 1.0. For the most central collisions, a strong suppression is observed for high-p(T) jets reconstructed with all distance parameters, implying that a significant amount of jet energy is scattered to large angles. The dependence of jet suppression on R is expected to be sensitive to both the jet energy loss mechanism and the medium response, and so the data are compared to several modern event generators and analytic calculations. The models considered do not fully reproduce the data.Öğe First measurement of the cross section for top quark pair production with additional charm jets using dileptonic final states in pp collisions at ?s=13 TeV(Elsevier, 2021) Sirunyan, A. Escalante; Fruehwirth, R.The first measurement of the inclusive cross section for top quark pairs (tt) produced in association with two additional charm jets is presented. The analysis uses the dileptonic final states of tt events produced in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 41.5 fb-1, recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. A new charm jet identification algorithm provides input to a neural network that is trained to distinguish among tt events with two additional charm (ttcc), bottom (ttbb), and light-flavour or gluon (ttLL) jets. By means of a template fitting procedure, the inclusive ttcc, ttbb, and ttLL cross sections are simultaneously measured, together with their ratios to the inclusive tt + two jets cross section. This provides measurements of the ttcc and ttbb cross sections of 10.1 +/- 1.2 (stat) +/- 1.4 (syst) pb and 4.54 +/- 0.35 (stat) +/- 0.56 (syst) pb, respectively, in the full phase space. The results are compared and found to be consistent with predictions from two different matrix element generators with next-to-leading order accuracy in quantum chromodynamics, interfaced with a parton shower simulation. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Bergauer, T.; Dragicevic, M.; Ero, J.Events where the two leading jets are separated by a pseudorapidity interval devoid of particle activity, known as jet-gap-jet events, are studied in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV. The signature is expected from hard color-singlet exchange. Each of the highest transverse momentum (p(T)) jets must have p(T)(jet) > 40 GeV and pseudorapidity 1.4 < vertical bar eta(jet)vertical bar < 4.7, with eta(jet1)eta(jet2) < 0, where jet1 and jet2 are the leading and subleading jets in p(T), respectively. The analysis is based on data collected by the CMS and TOTEM experiments during a low luminosity, high-beta* run at the CERN LHC in 2015, with an integrated luminosity of 0.66 pb(-1). Events with a low number of charged particles with p(T) > 0.2 GeV in the interval vertical bar eta vertical bar < 1 between the jets are observed in excess of calculations that assume only color-exchange. The fraction of events produced via color-singlet exchange, f(CSE), is measured as a function of p(T)(jet2), the pseudorapidity difference between the two leading jets, and the azimuthal angular separation between the two leading jets. The fraction f(CSE) has values of 0.4-1.0%. The results are compared with previous measurements and with predictions from perturbative quantum chromodynamics. In addition, the first study of jet-gap-jet events detected in association with an intact proton using a subsample of events with an integrated luminosity of 0.40 pb(-1) is presented. The intact protons are detected with the Roman pot detectors of the TOTEM experiment. The f(CSE) in this sample is 2.91 +/- 0.70(stat)(-1.01)(+1.08)(syst) times larger than that for inclusive dijet production in dijets with similar kinematics.Öğe Measurement of b jet shapes in proton-proton collisions at ?s=5.02 TeV(Springer, 2021) Sirunyan, A. The data sample used in this study was collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 27.4 pb(-1). To characterize the jet substructure, the differential jet shapes, defined as the normalized transverse momentum distribution of charged hadrons as a function of angular distance from the jet axis, are measured for b jets. In addition to the jet shapes, the per-jet yields of charged particles associated with b jets are also quantified, again as a function of the angular distance with respect to the jet axis. Extracted jet shape and particle yield distributions for b jets are compared with results for inclusive jets, as well as with the predictions from the pythia and herwig++ event generators.Öğe Measurement of differential t(t)over-bar production cross sections in the full kinematic range using lepton plus jets events from proton-proton collisions at ?s=13 TeV(Amer Physical Soc, 2021) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. EscalanteMeasurements of differential and double-differential cross sections of top-quark pair (t (t) over bar) production arc presented in the lepton + jets channels with a single electron or muon and jets in the final state. The analysis combines for the first time signatures of top quarks with low transverse momentum p(T), where the top-quark decay products can be identified as separated jets and isolated leptons, and with high p(T), where the decay products are collimated and overlap. The measurements arc based on proton-proton collision data at is - = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1). The cross sections are presented at the parton and particle levels, where the latter minimizes extrapolations based on theoretical assumptions. Most of the measured differential cross sections are well described by standard model predictions with the exception of some double-differential distributions. The inclusive t (t) over bar production cross section is measured to be sigma(t (t) over bar) = 791 +/- 25 pb, which constitutes the most precise measurement in the lepton + jets channel to date.Öğe Measurement of differential t(t)over-bar production cross sections using top quarks at large transverse momenta in pp collisions at ?s=13 TeV(Amer Physical Soc, 2021) Sirunyan, A. The data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC are from pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The measurement uses events where at least one top quark decays as t -> Wb -> qq(-1)b and is reconstructed as a large-radius jet with transverse momentum in excess of 400 GeV. The second top quark is required to decay either in a similar way or leptonically, as inferred from a reconstructed electron or muon, a bottom quark jet, and missing transverse momentum due to the undetected neutrino. The cross section is extracted as a function of kinematic variables of individual top quarks or of the t (t) over bar system. The results are presented at the particle level, within a region of phase space close to that of the experimental acceptance, and at the parton level and are compared to various theoretical models. The differential production cross sections of the D*(+/-), D-+/-, and D-0 ((D) over bar (0)) mesons are presented in ranges of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity 4 < p(T) < 100 GeV and vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.1, respectively. The Y mesons are reconstructed in their dimuon decay channel, as measured by the CMS detector. The collected data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 nb(-1). The scalar product method is used to extract the v2 coefficients of the azimuthal distributions. Results are reported for the rapidity range vertical bar y vertical bar < 2.4, in the transverse momentum interval 0 < pT < 50 GeV/c, and in three centrality ranges of 10-30%, 30-50% and 50-90%. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Damanakis, K.; Dragicevic, M.A measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry of pairs of oppositely charged leptons (dimuons and dielectrons) produced by the Drell-Yan process in proton-proton collisions is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb(-1) collected with the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The asymmetry is measured as a function of lepton pair mass for masses larger than 170 GeV and compared with standard model predictions. An inclusive measurement across both channels and the full mass range yields an asymmetry of 0.612 +/- 0.005 (stat) +/- 0.007 (syst). As a test of lepton flavor universality, the difference between the dimuon and dielectron asymmetries is measured as well. No statistically significant deviations from standard model predictions are observed. The measurements are used to set limits on the presence of additional gauge bosons. For a Z' boson in the sequential standard model the observed (expected) 95% confidence level lower limit on the Z' mass is 4.4 TeV (3.7 TeV).Öğe Measurement of the electroweak production of Z? and two jets in proton-proton collisions at ?s=13 TeV and constraints on anomalous quartic gauge couplings(Amer Physical Soc, 2021) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. The measured fiducial cross section for EW Z gamma jj is sigma(Ew) = 5.21 +/- 0.52(stat)+/- 0.56(syst) fb = 5.21 +/- 0.76 fb. Single-differential cross sections in photon, leading lepton, and leading jet transverse momenta, and double-differential cross sections in mjj and vertical bar Delta eta(jj)vertical bar are also measured. Exclusion limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings are derived at 95% confidence level in terms of the effective field theory operators M-0 to M-5, M-7, T-0 to T-2, and T-5 to T-9.Öğe Measurement of the Higgs boson production rate in association with top quarks in final states with electrons, muons, and hadronically decaying tau leptons at ?s=13TeV(Springer, 2021) Sirunyan, A. EscalanteThe rate for Higgs (H) bosons production in association with either one (tH) or two (t (t) over barH) top quarks is measured in final states containing multiple electrons, muons, or tau leptons decaying to hadrons and a neutrino, using proton-proton collisions recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the CMS experiment. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1). The analysis is aimed at events that contain H -> WW, H -> tt, or H -> ZZ decays and each of the top quark(s) decays either to lepton+jets or all-jet channels. Sensitivity to signal is maximized by including ten signatures in the analysis, depending on the lepton multiplicity. The separation among tH, t (t) over barH, and the backgrounds is enhanced through machine-learning techniques and matrix-element methods. The measured production rates for the ttH and tH signals correspond to 0.92 +/- 0.19 (stat)(-0.13)(+0.17) (syst) and 5.7 +/- 2.7 (stat)+/- 3.0 (syst) of their respective standard model (SM) expectations. The corresponding observed (expected) significance amounts to 4.7 (5.2) standard deviations for t (t) over barH, and to 1.4 (0.3) for tH production. Assuming that the Higgs boson coupling to the tau lepton is equal in strength to its expectation in the SM, the coupling y(t) of the Higgs boson to the top quark divided by its SM expectation, kappa(t) = y(t)/y(t)(SM), is constrained to be within -0.9 < -0.7 or 0.7 < 1.1, at 95% confidence level. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Bergauer, T.; Dragicevic, M.; Ero, J.Measurements of the fiducial inclusive and differential production cross sections of the Higgs boson in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV are performed using events where the Higgs boson decays into a pair of W bosons that subsequently decay into a final state with an electron, a muon, and a pair of neutrinos. The analysis is based on data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC during 2016-2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1). Production cross sections are measured as a function of the transverse momentum of the Higgs boson and the associated jet multiplicity. The Higgs boson signal is extracted and simultaneously unfolded to correct for selection efficiency and resolution effects using maximum-likelihood fits to the observed distributions in data. The integrated fiducial cross section is measured to be 86.5 +/- 9.5 fb, consistent with the Standard Model expectation of 82.5 +/- 4.2 fb. No significant deviation from the Standard Model expectations is observed in the differential measurements.
