Öğe Critical discourse analysis in analysing European Union foreign policy: Prospects and challenges(Sage Publications Ltd, 2014) Aydin-Duzgit, SenemThis article discusses the potential of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) for the study of EU foreign policy and argues that CDA can provide a systematic way of studying discourses on EU foreign policy through the refined linguistic and argumentative tools that it offers. The article first outlines the main theoretical premises of CDA and its one particular variant, the discourse-historical approach, and then presents a discussion on its analytical and methodological toolkit. After discussing the various ways in which EU foreign policy texts can be subject to CDA, the article concludes with the theoretical challenges posed by CDA, particularly regarding its relationship with poststructuralist approaches to foreign policy.Öğe European parliament 'doing' Europe Unravelling the right-wing culturalist discourse on Turkey's accession to the EU(John Benjamins Publishing Co, 2015) Aydin-Duzgit, SenemThis article focuses on the discourses of the main centre-right political party group (EPP-ED, EPP) in the European Parliament on Turkey's accession to the European Union. It utilises the analytical framework of the Discourse-Historical Approach in Critical Discourse Analysis to mainly concentrate on the articulations of 'culture' and 'cultural identity' in the discussions over Turkish accession in official parliamentary debates and in-depth personal interviews with the members of this group. It is argued that a relational theorising of identity allows for analysis of the ways in which a cultural 'Europe' is articulated through current discussions on Turkey in the mainstream right-wing European Parliament discourse and thus reveals the cultural borders that are enacted with reference to Turkish membership within this group.Öğe European security and the accession of Turkey: Identity and foreign policy in the European Commission(Sage Publications Ltd, 2013) Aydin-Duzgit, SenemFollowing a poststructuralist theorising of identity in international relations, which argues that identity is relationally and discursively constructed through foreign policy, this article attempts to analyse the way in which the European Commission discursively constructs European identit(ies) in its relations with Turkey around the theme of security'. The study utilises the methodological tools of critical discourse analysis in analysing the speeches and field interviews conducted with European Commission officials, in examining the way in which they construct Europe' in relation to the security implications of Turkish accession. The article's findings challenge the argument that Europe is moving beyond the modern state to resemble a postmodern order, and problematises the designation of the Commission as a cosmopolitan' actor in EU enlargement policy.Öğe Öğe Lost in Europeanisation: The Western Balkans and Turkey(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2012) Noutcheva, Gergana; Aydin-Duzgit, SenemThe article analyses the EU's impact on the rule of law in the Western Balkans and Turkey. It enquires into the reasons behind the patchy record of rule-of-law reforms in Turkey, Croatia and Albania by examining judicial reforms in response to the EU accession requirements. It argues that a credible EU accession perspective and an adequate degree of state capacity are necessary but not sufficient conditions for explaining the fluctuations in the rule-of-law standards in EU accession countries. The genuine, partial or non-alignment of the ruling elites' domestic incentives with the EU incentives is a key determinant of rule-of-law trends in the Western Balkans and Turkey.Öğe No Crisis, No Change: The Third AKP Victory in the June 2011 Parliamentary Elections in Turkey(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2012) Aydin-Duzgit, SenemAmidst debates over a new constitution and increasing tensions over the Kurdish issue, the June 2011 parliamentary elections were considered crucial for the fate of democratic consolidation in Turkey.
