Öğe Addendum: Measurement and QCD analysis of double-differential inclusive jet cross sections in proton-proton collisions at ?s=13 TeV(Springer, 2022) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.; Del Valle, A. EscalanteThe QCD analysis at NNLO is repeated by using the NNLO interpolation grids for the double-differential inclusive jet cross section [1], which were released after the journal publication of the original analysis. The NNLOJET calculation used to derive these grids is based on the leading-colour and leading-flavour-number approximation and does not include the most recent subleading colour contributions. However, these contributions were reported in ref. [2] to be very small in inclusive jet production, in particular for a jet size of R = 0.7. The grids also contain an estimate of the numerical integration uncertainty of around 1% or less. To account for point-to-point fluctuations, this uncertainty, after consultation with the authors of NNLOJET, has been increased by a factor of two; however, its impact in the fit is negligible. A comparison of the measurement with predictions using various PDFs is shown in figure 1. Although the PDF parametrisation remains identical, higher precision in PDF and QCD parameters is expected by using NNLO grids consistently in the QCD analysis. These new results supersede those obtained by using the k-factor technique.Öğe Combined searches for the production of supersymmetric top quark partners in proton-proton collisions at ?s=13 TeV(Springer, 2021) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.; Del Valle, A. EscalanteA combination of searches for top squark pair production using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment, is presented. Signatures with at least 2 jets and large missing transverse momentum are categorized into events with 0, 1, or 2 leptons. New results for regions of parameter space where the kinematical properties of top squark pair production and top quark pair production are very similar are presented. Depending on themodel, the combined result excludes a top squarkmass up to 1325 GeV for amassless neutralino, and a neutralinomass up to 700 GeV for a top squarkmass of 1150 GeV. Top squarks with masses from 145 to 295 GeV, for neutralino masses from 0 to 100 GeV, with a mass difference between the top squark and the neutralino in a window of 30 GeV around the mass of the top quark, are excluded for the first time with CMS data. The results of theses searches are also interpreted in an alternative signal model of dark matter production via a spin-0 mediator in association with a top quark pair. Upper limits are set on the cross section for mediator particle masses of up to 420 GeV.Öğe Constraints on anomalous Higgs boson couplings to vector bosons and fermions in its production and decay using the four-lepton final state(Amer Physical Soc, 2021) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.Studies of CP violation and anomalous couplings of the Higgs boson to vector bosons and fermions are presented. The data were acquired by the CMS experiment at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1) at a proton-proton collision energy of 13 TeV. The kinematic effects in the Higgs boson's four-lepton decay H -> 4l and its production in association with two jets, a vector boson, or top quarks are analyzed, using a full detector simulation and matrix element techniques to identify the production mechanisms and to increase sensitivity to the tensor structure of the Higgs boson interactions. A simultaneous measurement is performed of up to five Higgs boson couplings to electroweak vector bosons (HVV), two couplings to gluons (Hgg), and two couplings to top quarks (Htt). The CP measurement in the Htt interaction is combined with the recent measurement in the H -> gamma gamma channel. The results are presented in the framework of anomalous couplings and are also interpreted in the framework of effective field theory, including the first study of CP properties of the Htt and effective Hgg couplings from a simultaneous analysis of the gluon fusion and top-associated processes. The results are consistent with the standard model of particle physics.Öğe Evidence for WW/WZ vector boson scattering in the decay channel l?qq produced in association with two jets in proton-proton collisions at ?s=13TeV(Elsevier, 2022) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.; Del Valle, A. EscalanteEvidence is reported for electroweak (EW) vector boson scattering in the decay channel l nu qq of two weak vector bosons WV(V = Wor Z), produced in association with two parton jets. The search uses a data set of proton-proton collisions at 13TeVcollected with the CMS detector during 2016-2018 with an integrated luminosity of 138fb(-1). Events are selected requiring one lepton (electron or muon), moderate missing transverse momentum, two jets with a large pseudorapidity separation and a large dijet invariant mass, and a signature consistent with the hadronic decay of a W/Zboson. The cross section is computed in a fiducial phase space defined at parton level requiring all parton transverse momenta p(T)> 10 GeVand at least one pair of outgoing partons with invariant mass mqq> 100 GeV. The measured and expected EW WVproduction cross sections are 1.90(-0.46)(+0.5)3 pb and 2.23(-0.11)(+0.08)(scale) +/- 0.05(PDF) pb, respectively, where PDF is the parton distribution function. The observed EW signal strength is mu EW= 0.85 +/- 0.12 (stat)(-0.17)(+0.19)(syst), corresponding to a signal significance of 4.4 standard deviations with 5.1 expected, and it is measured keeping the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) associated diboson production fixed to the standard model prediction. This is the first evidence of vector boson scattering in the l nu qq decay channel at LHC. The simultaneous measurement of the EW and QCD associated diboson production agrees with the standard model prediction. (C) 2022 The Author(s). W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.; Del Valle, A. EscalanteMeasurements of differential and double-differential cross sections of top-quark pair (t (t) over bar) production arc presented in the lepton + jets channels with a single electron or muon and jets in the final state. The analysis combines for the first time signatures of top quarks with low transverse momentum p(T), where the top-quark decay products can be identified as separated jets and isolated leptons, and with high p(T), where the decay products are collimated and overlap. The measurements arc based on proton-proton collision data at is - = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1). The cross sections are presented at the parton and particle levels, where the latter minimizes extrapolations based on theoretical assumptions. Most of the measured differential cross sections are well described by standard model predictions with the exception of some double-differential distributions. The inclusive t (t) over bar production cross section is measured to be sigma(t (t) over bar) = 791 +/- 25 pb, which constitutes the most precise measurement in the lepton + jets channel to date.Öğe Measurement of the Drell-Yan forward-backward asymmetry at high dilepton masses in proton-proton collisions at ?s=13 TeV(Springer, 2022) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Damanakis, K.; Dragicevic, M.A measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry of pairs of oppositely charged leptons (dimuons and dielectrons) produced by the Drell-Yan process in proton-proton collisions is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb(-1) collected with the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The asymmetry is measured as a function of lepton pair mass for masses larger than 170 GeV and compared with standard model predictions. An inclusive measurement across both channels and the full mass range yields an asymmetry of 0.612 +/- 0.005 (stat) +/- 0.007 (syst). As a test of lepton flavor universality, the difference between the dimuon and dielectron asymmetries is measured as well. No statistically significant deviations from standard model predictions are observed. The measurements are used to set limits on the presence of additional gauge bosons. For a Z' boson in the sequential standard model the observed (expected) 95% confidence level lower limit on the Z' mass is 4.4 TeV (3.7 TeV).Öğe Measurement of the electroweak production of Z? and two jets in proton-proton collisions at ?s=13 TeV and constraints on anomalous quartic gauge couplings(Amer Physical Soc, 2021) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.; Del Valle, A. EscalanteThe first observation of the electroweak (EW) production of a Z boson, a photon, and two forward jets (Z gamma jj) in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is presented. A data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1), collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016-2018 is used. The measured fiducial cross section for EW Z gamma jj is sigma(Ew) = 5.21 +/- 0.52(stat)+/- 0.56(syst) fb = 5.21 +/- 0.76 fb. Single-differential cross sections in photon, leading lepton, and leading jet transverse momenta, and double-differential cross sections in mjj and vertical bar Delta eta(jj)vertical bar are also measured. Exclusion limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings are derived at 95% confidence level in terms of the effective field theory operators M-0 to M-5, M-7, T-0 to T-2, and T-5 to T-9.Öğe Measurement of the inclusive and differential t(t)over-bar? cross sections in the single-lepton channel and EFT interpretation at ?s=13 TeV(Springer, 2021) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.; Del Valle, A. EscalanteThe production cross section of a top quark pair in association with a photon is measured in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data set, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1), was recorded by the CMS experiment during the 2016-2018 data taking of the LHC. The measurements are performed in a fiducial volume defined at the particle level. Events with an isolated, highly energetic lepton, at least three jets from the hadronization of quarks, among which at least one is b tagged, and one isolated photon are selected. The inclusive fiducial t (t) over bar'gamma cross section, for a photon with transverse momentum greater than 20 GeV and pseudorapidity vertical bar eta vertical bar< 1.4442, is measured to be 798 +/- 7(stat) +/- 48(syst) fb, in good agreement with the prediction from the standard model at next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics. The differential cross sections are also measured as a function of several kinematic observables and interpreted in the framework of the standard model effective field theory (EFT), leading to the most stringent direct limits to date on anomalous electromagnetic dipole moment interactions of the top quark and the photon.Öğe Measurement of the top quark mass using events with a single reconstructed top quark in pp collisions at ?s=13 TeV(Springer, 2021) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.; Del Valle, A. EscalanteA measurement of the top quark mass is performed using a data sample enriched with single top quark events produced in the t channel. The study is based on protonproton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1), recorded at root s = 13TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016. Candidate events are selected by requiring an isolated high-momentum lepton (muon or electron) and exactly two jets, of which one is identified as originating from a bottom quark. Multivariate discriminants are designed to separate the signal from the background. Optimized thresholds are placed on the discriminant outputs to obtain an event sample with high signal purity. The top quark mass is found to be 172.13(-0.77)(+0.76) GeV, where the uncertainty includes both the statistical and systematic components, reaching sub-GeV precision for the first time in this event topology. The masses of the top quark and antiquark are also determined separately using the lepton charge in the final state, from which the mass ratio and difference are determined to be 0.9952(-0.0104)(+0.0079) and 0.83(-1.35)(+1.79) GeV, respectively. The results are consistent with CPT invariance.Öğe Measurement of the W? Production Cross Section in Proton-Proton Collisions at ?s=13 TeV and Constraints on Effective Field Theory Coefficients(Amer Physical Soc, 2021) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.A fiducial cross section for W gamma production in proton-proton collisions is measured at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 137 fb(-1) of data collected using the CMS detector at the LHC. The W -> e nu and mu nu decay modes are used in a maximum-likelihood fit to the lepton-photon invariant mass distribution to extract the combined cross section. The measured cross section is compared with theoretical expectations at next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics. In addition, 95% confidence level intervals are reported for anomalous triple-gauge couplings within the framework of effective field theory.Öğe Measurements of production cross sections of the Higgs boson in the four-lepton final state in proton-proton collisions at ?s=13 TeV(Springer, 2021) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.Production cross sections of the Higgs boson are measured in the H -> ZZ -> 4l (l = e, mu) decay channel. A data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1) is used. The signal strength modifier mu, defined as the ratio of the Higgs boson production rate in the 4l channel to the standard model (SM) expectation, is measured to be mu = 0.94 +/- 0.07 (stat)(-0.08)(+0.09) (syst) at a fixed value of m(H) = 125.38 GeV. The signal strength modifiers for the individual Higgs boson production modes are also reported. The inclusive fiducial cross section for the H -> 4l process is measured to be 2.84(-0.22)(+0.23) (stat)(-0.21)(+0.26) (syst) fb, which is compatible with the SM prediction of 2.84 +/- 0.15 fb for the same fiducial region. Differential cross sections as a function of the transverse momentum and rapidity of the Higgs boson, the number of associated jets, and the transverse momentum of the leading associated jet are measured. A new set of cross section measurements in mutually exclusive categories targeted to identify production mechanisms and kinematical features of the events is presented. The results are in agreement with the SM predictions.Öğe Measurements of the pp ? W±?? and pp ? EscalanteThe cross section for W or Z boson production in association with two photons is measured in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The W -> l nu and Z -> ll decay modes (where l = e, mu) are used to extract the W gamma gamma and Z gamma gamma cross sections in a phase space defined by electron (muon) with transverse momentum larger than 30 GeV and photon transverse momentum larger than 20 GeV. All leptons and photons are required to have absolute pseudorapidity smaller than 2.5. The measured cross sections in this phase space are sigma(W gamma gamma) = 13.6(-1.9)(+1.9) (stat)(-4.0)(+4.0) (syst) +/- 0.08 (PDF + scale) fb and sigma(Z gamma gamma) = 5.41(-0.55)(+0.58) (stat)(-0.70)(+0.64) (syst) +/- 0.06 (PDF + scale) fb. Limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings are set in the framework of an effective field theory with dimension-8 operators.Öğe Observation of a New Excited Beauty Strange Baryon Decaying to ?b-?+?-(Amer Physical Soc, 2021) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.The Xi(-)(b)pi(+)pi(-) invariant mass spectrum is investigated with an event sample of proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016-2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb(-1). The ground state Xi(-)(b) is reconstructed via its decays to J/psi Xi(-) and J/psi Lambda K-. A narrow resonance, labeled Xi(b)(6100)(-), is observed at a Xi(-)(b)pi(+)pi(-) invariant mass of 6100.3 +/- 0.2(stat) +/- 0.1(syst) +/- 0.6(Xi(-)(b)) MeV, where the last uncertainty reflects the precision of the Xi(-)(b) baryon mass. The upper limit on the Xi(b)(6100)(-) natural width is determined to be 1.9 MeV at 95% confidence level. The low Xi(b)(6100)(-) signal yield observed in data does not allow a measurement of the quantum numbers of the new state. However, following analogies with the established excited Xi(c) baryon states, the new Xi(b)(6100)(-) resonance and its decay sequence are consistent with the orbitally excited Xi(- )(b)baryon, with spin and parity quantum numbers J(P) = 3/2(-).Öğe Observation of tW production in the single-lepton channel in pp collisions at ?s=13 TeV(Springer, 2021) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.; Del Valle, A. EscalanteA measurement of the cross section of the associated production of a single top quark and a W boson in final states with a muon or electron and jets in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV is presented. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36 fb(-1) collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in 2016. A boosted decision tree is used to separate the tW signal from the dominant t (t) over bar background, whilst the subleading W+jets and multijet backgrounds are constrained using data-based estimates. This result is the first observation of the tW process in final states containing a muon or electron and jets, with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations. The cross section is determined to be 89 +/- 4 (stat) +/- 12 (syst) pb, consistent with the standard model.Öğe Precision luminosity measurement in proton-proton collisions at ?S=13 TeV in 2015 and 2016 at CMS(Springer, 2021) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.The measurement of the luminosity recorded by the CMS detector installed at LHC interaction point 5, using proton-proton collisions at root S = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016, is reported. The absolute luminosity scale is measured for individual bunch crossings using beam-separation scans (the van der Meer method), with a relative precision of 1.3 and 1.0% in 2015 and 2016, respectively. The dominant sources of uncertainty are related to residual differences between the measured beam positions and the ones provided by the operational settings of the LHC magnets, the factorizability of the proton bunch spatial density functions in the coordinates transverse to the beam direction, and the modeling of the effect of electromagnetic interactions among protons in the colliding bunches. When applying the van der Meer calibration to the entire run periods, the integrated luminosities when CMS was fully operational are 2.27 and 36.3 fb(-1) in 2015 and 2016, with a relative precision of 1.6 and 1.2%, respectively. These are among the most precise luminosity measurements at bunched-beam hadron colliders.Öğe Search for a heavy Higgs boson decaying into two lighter Higgs bosons in the ??bb final state at 13TeV(Springer, 2021) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.; Del Valle, A. EscalanteA search for a heavy Higgs boson H decaying into the observed Higgs boson h with a mass of 125 GeV and another Higgs boson h(S) is presented. The h and h(S) bosons are required to decay into a pair of tau leptons and a pair of b quarks, respectively. The search uses a sample of proton-proton collisions collected with the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1). Mass ranges of 240-3000 GeV for m(H) and 60-2800 GeV for m(hS) are explored in the search. No signal has been observed. Model independent 95% confidence level upper limits on the product of the production cross section and the branching fractions of the signal process are set with a sensitivity ranging from 125 fb (for m(H) = 240 GeV) to 2.7 fb (for m(H) = 1000 GeV). These limits are compared to maximally allowed products of the production cross section and the branching fractions of the signal process in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model.Öğe Search for charged Higgs bosons produced in vector boson fusion processes and decaying into vector boson pairs in proton-proton collisions at ?s=13 TeV(Springer, 2021) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.A search for charged Higgs bosons produced in vector boson fusion processes and decaying into vector bosons, using proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV at the LHC, is reported. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1) collected with the CMS detector. Events are selected by requiring two or three electrons or muons, moderate missing transverse momentum, and two jets with a large rapidity separation and a large dijet mass. No excess of events with respect to the standard model background predictions is observed. Model independent upper limits at 95% confidence level are reported on the product of the cross section and branching fraction for vector boson fusion production of charged Higgs bosons as a function of mass, from 200 to 3000 GeV. The results are interpreted in the context of the Georgi-Machacek model.Öğe Search for chargino-neutralino production in events with Higgs and W bosons using 137 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at ?s=13 TeV(Springer, 2021) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.; Escalante Del Valle, A.A search for electroweak production of supersymmetric (SUSY) particles in final states with one lepton, a Higgs boson decaying to a pair of bottom quarks, and large missing transverse momentum is presented. The search uses data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected using the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1). The observed yields are consistent with backgrounds expected from the standard model. The results are interpreted in the context of a simplified SUSY model of chargino-neutralino production, with the chargino decaying to a W boson and the lightest SUSY particle (LSP) and the neutralino decaying to a Higgs boson and the LSP. Charginos and neutralinos with masses up to 820 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level when the LSP mass is small, and LSPs with mass up to 350 GeV are excluded when the masses of the chargino and neutralino are approximately 700 GeV.Öğe Search for lepton-flavor violating decays of the Higgs boson in the ?? and e? final states in proton-proton collisions at ?s=13 TeV(Amer Physical Soc, 2021) Sirunyan, A. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1) collected at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. No significant excess has been found, and the results are interpreted in terms of upper limits on lepton-flavor violating branching fractions of the Higgs boson. The observed (expected) upper limits on the branching fractions are, respectively, B(H -> mu t) < 0.15(0.15)% and B(H -> e tau) < 0.22(0.16)% at 95% confidence level.Öğe Search for Long-Lived Particles Decaying in the CMS End Cap Muon Detectors in Proton-Proton Collisions at ?s=13 TeV(Amer Physical Soc, 2021) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J. W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Dragicevic, M.; Del Valle, A. EscalanteA search for long-lived particles (LLPs) produced in decays of standard model (SM) Higgs bosons is presented. The data sample consists of 137 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV, recorded at the LHC in 2016-2018. A novel technique is employed to reconstruct decays of LLPs in the end cap muon detectors. The search is sensitive to a broad range of LLP decay modes and to masses as low as a few GeV. No excess of events above the SM background is observed. The most stringent limits to date on the branching fraction of the Higgs boson to LLPs subsequently decaying to quarks and tau(+)tau(-) are found for proper decay lengths greater than 6, 20, and 40 m, for LLP masses of 7, 15, and 40 GeV, respectively.
