Although much has been written about the upsurge of joy and festivities celebrating the 1908 Young Turk Revolution and the touching scenes of fraternity between Muslims and non-Muslims that prevailed throughout the Ottoman lands, very little is known about the visits of two top leaders of the Committee of Union and Progress, Doctor Naz & imath;m and Enver Bey -who after the First World War were tried and sentenced to death in absentia for their involvement in crimes of Armenian 'deportations and massacres'- to Izmir Armenians. Based mainly on Armenian newspapers in & Idot;zmir and elsewhere, as well as other newspapers of the period, this article fills this void. Izmir Armenians enthusiastically welcomed the revolution and hailed its triumph with elaborate celebrations and festivities. The Young Turks, on their part, including their leaders -Doctor Naz & imath;m and Enver Bey- praised Armenians for their contribution to and sacrifices for liberty. For the latter, this was a liminal period in which the deeply ingrained religious hierarchy relegating the non-Muslims to a secondary status seemed to be permanently set aside. However, the post-liminal period of 'incorporation into the new world' never materialized for Armenians.
