A comparative analysis of performance practice in pre-bop, bebop and post-bop eras, as observed on 3 standard type chord progressions

Abstract

Gitar ve onun ataları olan 'gittern' ve vihuela, MS 13. yüzyıldan bu yana varlığını sürdürmektedir. Akortlu çalgılar (chordophone) ailesinin bir üyesi olan gitarın çeşitli türleri, MÖ 14. yüzyılda Hitit kabartmalarında tasvir edilmiştir (Bellow 1970, 6-11). Bu düşük sesli, polifonik çalgı, özellikle MS 16. yüzyılda Avrupa'da popülerlik kazanmıştır (Sachs 1940, 344). It is a member of the chordophone family of instruments, variants of which have been depicted on Hittite carvings dating from 14th century BC (Bellow 1970, 6-11). This quiet little polyphonic instrument became popular in Europe especially during the 16th century CE (Sachs 1940, 344). Early on, it was mostly played in a strumming fashion to accompany dances and singing. As a number of notable composers like Luys Milan, Adrian Le Roy and Gaspar Sanz started playing and writing for the instrument, a more artful style of playing, using four fingers of the right hand to pluck the strings was developed, enabling polyphonic music and counterpoint to be performed on the instrument. It was practical to carry around, but was played almost exclusively for small audiences in small chambers and recital rooms. The guitar's role in early jazz and Dixieland bands of the 1910's and 1920's and the immensely popular big bands of the 1930's was strictly limited to accompaniment. The guitarist, as a member of the rhythm section, usually played an archtop acoustic guitar strung with bronze wound steel strings, strumming evenly placed chords along with the drummer's ride cymbal or hi-hat. His/her responsibility was keeping the beat while providing harmonic information which was mostly felt, rather than heard. With the advent of microphones, amplification and the electromagnetic pickup transducers, electric guitars were introduced and from the mid 1930's on the guitarist's role in jazz ensembles started to shift from accompanist to soloist. The focus of this study will be on the evolution of jazz guitar performance practices captured on recordings by pioneering historical figures such as Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian, Oscar Moore, from the late 1930's, up until players of the current era, like Kurt Rosenwinkel, Lage Lund and Pasquale Grasso. To assess the transformation of approaches to jazz guitar, I will analyze the recordings of 3 standard type chord progressions by players that adhere to styles which originated during 3 distinct periods in jazz history: 1936 - 1945 (pre-bop), 1945 - 1955 (bebop), 1955 - 2022 (post-bop). The analyses will be based on harmonic and rhythmic aspects, phrase length, tempi, timbre, equipment etc.
