Design and production of a soft growing robot for telemanipulation tasks

Abstract

Bu tez, yumuşak robotik ve teleoperasyon sistemleri alanlarındaki önemli gelişmeleri sunmakta ve her iki alandaki temel zorlukları ele almaktadır. Arama kurtarma, denetim ve tıbbi prosedürler alanında kullanılan teleoperasyon uygulamalarını hedefleyen, yavaş büyüyen bir robotik sistem için yenilikçi bir tasarım ve kapsamlı bir üretim süreci tanıtıldı. Bu yeni robot, ucundan itibaren büyüyerek sürtünmeyi azaltıyor ve kısıtlı ortamlarda verimli navigasyon sağlıyor; ön testlerle verimliliği ve uyarlanabilirliği doğrulanıyor. Ayrıca bu tez, Eliptik Fourier Tanımlayıcı (EFD) katsayılarını kullanarak teleoperasyon sistemlerinin şeffaflığını sayısal olarak değerlendirmek için sağlam bir yöntem önermektedir. Kaydedilen deneysel verileri cebirsel olarak temsil eden ve Hibrit Matris'i hesaplayan bu yöntem, sistem şeffaflığının değerlendirilmesi için kesin bir ölçüm sağlar. Önerilen algoritma, zaman gecikmeli ve gecikmesiz sistemler için gerçek deneysel verilerle doğrulanmıştır ve harmonik sayısının Hibrit Matris hesaplaması üzerindeki etkisinin bir analizini içermektedir. Bu katkılar birlikte, yavaş büyüyen robotların ve teleoperasyon sistemlerinin yeteneklerini ve performansını geliştirerek zorlu ortamlarda gezinmek için çok yönlü çözümler sunar ve teleoperasyon uygulamalarında optimum performansı garanti eder.This thesis presents significant advancements in the fields of soft robotics and teleoperation systems, addressing key challenges in both areas. An innovative design and comprehensive manufacturing process for a soft growing robotic system is introduced, aimed at teleoperation applications used in the field of search and rescue, inspection, and medical procedures. This novel robot grows from its tip, reducing friction and enabling efficient navigation through constrained environments, with preliminary tests validating its efficiency and adaptability. In addition, this thesis proposes a robust method for numerically assessing the transparency of teleoperation systems using Elliptic Fourier Descriptor (EFD) coefficients. By representing recorded experimental data algebraically and computing the Hybrid Matrix, this method provides a precise metric for evaluating system transparency. The proposed algorithm is validated through real experimental data for systems with and without time delay, and includes an analysis of the effect of the number of harmonics on the Hybrid Matrix calculation. Together, these contributions enhance the capabilities and performance of soft growing robots and teleoperation systems, offering versatile solutions for navigating challenging environments and ensuring optimal performance in teleoperation applications.
