How do macroeconomic indicators affect stock market returns? An analysis of the Borsa Istanbul stock exchange and Türki·ye

Abstract

Bu tez, 2009-2024 dönemine ait aylık verilerle Türkiye'deki makroekonomik göstergeler ile borsa getirileri arasındaki ilişkiyi incelemektedir. GARCH (1,1) modeli kullanılarak yapılan analizde, küresel piyasa eğilimleri ve USD/TRY döviz kuru BIST getirileri üzerinde anlamlı etkilere sahipken, diğer yerel makroekonomik değişkenlerin tutarlı bir etkisi bulunmamıştır. Bulgular, Türkiye borsasının iç ekonomik göstergelerden ziyade küresel yatırımcı duyarlılığı ve döviz kuru riski tarafından yönlendirildiğini göstermektedir.This thesis investigates the relationship between macroeconomic indicators and stock market returns in Türkiye using monthly data from 2009 to 2024. Employing GARCH (1,1) modeling, it finds that while global market trends and the USD/TRY exchange rate significantly impact BIST returns, other domestic macroeconomic variables show no consistent effect. These results suggest that global investor sentiment and currency risk, rather than internal economic indicators, heavily influence the Turkish stock market. The findings underscore the significance of financial stability and global market integration for both policymakers and investors.
