Özet

This study is primarily based on investigating the prevalence of automated journalism techniques in Turkish media before the rise of globally released generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT. The significance of the chapter lies in its focus on professionals in both traditional and internet journalism, as well as content creation, without differentiating them based on rank, title, or status. Additionally, it stands out as initial research into exploring the connection between artificial intelligence techniques and journalism practices in Türkiye. The preliminary research concluded that automated journalism was not common in Türkiye, and most journalists interviewed had limited knowledge of the subject and/or were pessimistic about using such technology. Additionally, the journalists identified several issues in the media industry in Türkiye, such as unemployment, political pressures, lack of funding, and a negative outlook on the profession’s future. However, the study also suggested that on-site observation and in-depth interviews were necessary to fully understand journalists’ opinions and the use of automated journalism techniques. Besides, despite the continuous anxieties about the role of AI, many journalists were eager to use generative AI tools. The paper also concludes that reskilling and upskilling are necessary for many industries, including journalism, to prevent mass unemployment and to ease the adaptation to new jobs created due to automation, which could improve productivity and competition in Türkiye and the global sphere. As a follow-up to the initial research, a series of interviews were conducted, and additional field notes from an ongoing AI Literacy Project were used. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Raquel V.
