dc.description.abstract1922 yılında "izm" lerin dünya çapında yaygınlaştığı bir dönemde James Joyce Ulysses ile edebiyat dünyasına yeni bir boyut kazandırmış ve modernizme yön veren bir yazar olarak tanınmıştır. Kendine has eşsiz anlatısı ve özellikle İngilizce dilindeki deneyselliği Joyceçuları ortaya çıkarmıştır. Joyce, edebi standartların ötesine geçerek bize icat etmenin edebiyatın ayırt edici özelliği olabileceğini göstermiştir. Bu tezde, dünya çapında birçok dile (bazılarına birden fazla kez) çevrilen Ulysses bu çalışmada ise çevrilebilirlik ve çevrilemezlik kapsamında incelenmiştir. Ulysses'in her bir bölümünden örnekler verilerek Nevzat Erkmen (1996), Armağan Ekici (2012) ve Fuat Sevimay (2019) tarafından yapılan Türkçe çeviriler kaynak metinle karşılaştırmalı olarak ele alınmıştır. Seçilen örneklerde çevirmenlerin kısıtlılıkları ve çözümlerinin yanı sıra bu kadar yüksek düzeyde yapılandırılmış bir eserde nihai olarak çevrilemez örnekler sunulmuştur. Bunun yanı sıra Ulysses çalışmalarında yeni bir terim denebilecek 'shortmind' etkisi literatüre kazandırılmak üzere incelenmiştir. Kaynak metnin fonolojik ve yazınsal bakımdan çevrilemez tabiatı nedeniyle bu çalışma Ulysses'in yeniden tercüme edilmesinin kaçınılmaz bir gereklilik olduğu sonucuna ulaşmıştır.
dc.description.abstractIn 1922, when "ism"s abounded worldwide, James Joyce's Ulysses added a new dimension to the literary world, and we as readers knew him as an author giving direction to modernism. His unique narrative and experimentality especially in English led to the emergence of devoted Joyceans. Joyce showed us that inventing can be the hallmark of literature by outdoing the conventional literary standards. In this thesis, Ulysses, having been translated into numerous languages (to some of which are multiple times), has been reviewed within the scope of translatability and untranslatability. By offering examples from the eighteen episodes of Ulysses, this study compares Turkish renditions of Nevzat Erkmen (1996), Armağan Ekici (2012) and Fuat Sevimay (2019) with the source text. The selected examples present limitations and solutions employed by translators as well as examples that are ultimately untranslatable in such a highly structured work. In addition, 'shortmind' effect, which can be called a new field of study, is visited in order to contribute to the literature. Due to the source text's untranslatable nature caused by phonological and literary aspects, the study has concluded that the retranslation of Ulysses is an ongoing necessity.
