From city to the stream: A diachronic examination of on-screen portrayals of female, queer and diverse characters in 'Sex and The City' and 'And Just Like That'

Abstract

Bu tez, Sex and the City(1998-2004) ve devamı olan And Just Like That(2021-günümüz) dizilerindeki toplumsal cinsiyet rolleri, kuir temsiller ve çeşitlilik olgularının zaman içindeki evrimini incelemektedir. Feminist teori, kuir teori, kesişimsellik ve medya sosyolojisi yaklaşımlarını temel alan bu çalışma, dizilerin değişen toplumsal değerler ve medya dönüşümleriyle nasıl bir ilişki kurduğunu analiz etmektedir. Analizin merkezinde, yeni nesil televizyon içerik platformlarının anlatıları yeniden şekilllendirmedeki rolü, kapsayıcılığı teşvik etmesi ve sistemik eleştirilere yanıt verirken çeşitliliği metalaştırma gibi zorluklar barındırması yer almaktadır.This thesis explores the diachronic evolution of gender roles, queer representation, and diversity in Sex and the City(1998-2004) and its sequel And Just Like That(2021-present). By employing feminist theory, queer theory, intersectionality, and media sociology, this study examines how these series navigate shifting societal values and media transformations over two decades. Central to the analysis is the role of streaming platforms in reshaping narratives, fostering inclusivity, and addressing systemic critiques, while also introducing challenges like the commodification of diversity.
