Özet
This chapter analyzes the Kurdish municipal experience through the case of Diyarbakir-the heartland of Turkey’s Kurdish-populated southeastern region. In dialogue with the literature on “new municipalism,” it illustrates the ways in which the prospects of the Kurdish movement’s radical democracy project are interrelated with mainstream developmental imaginaries, despite the strong accent put on a post-capitalist, socialized economy. Ultimately, the chapter suggests adopting a broader political and geographical approach to new municipal politics, attuned to the multiplicity of the local scale, and multi-layered political and geopolitical dynamics at play at various scales, particularly in the context of ethno-nationally contested cities. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Gülçin Balamir Coskun, Tuba Inal-Çekiç, and Ertug Tombus.
