İlk bölümde konuya dair kavramlar ele alınıp irdelenmiş ve Türkiye'de hapishaneler ile mahpuslar üzerine verilere yer verilmiştir. İkinci bölümde Osmanlı'dan günümüze hapishaneler, mahbes (zindan), hapishane ve cezaevi dönemlendirmesi çerçevesinde anlatılmış; üçüncü bölümde ise iyileştirme kavramı, hapishanelerin patolojik niteliği, hapishanelerde sürmekte olan mücadelenin kimliksel niteliği ve hapishanelerde iyi otorite meselesi tartışılmıştır.The study is composed of three parts. In the first part, the terms related with the subject of the thesis are considered and the data on the prisons and the prisoners in Turkey is presented. In the second part, the evolution of prison system since the Otoman era is evaluated in three periods which are mahpes (dungeon), hapishane (jailhouse), and cezaevi (prison).
