Digitaliasion processes and technological applications in art museums in Turkey
(İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi, 2022) Dirik, Kayra; Gürpınar, Avşar
ABSTRACT: This thesis investigates the digitalisation processes of art museums worldwide and in Turkey. The aim is to compare these processes with digital technology applications. The study consists of a literature review based mostly on secondary resources. The thesis presents an overview of the historical evolution of art museums initially. Moreover, the constitution of the museum concept, the adoption of the visitorcentric approach of museums, and the entry of digitalisation into museums are included. In the first chapter, the digitalisation processes of art museums is handled under three main parts and analysed with examples. The first part discusses the reproduction of art. While artwork can be reproduced through photography, the concept of going to the museum has begun to change its meaning. The second part covers the entry of digital technologies into museums, initial examples, and their effects on museums. The last part deals with the increasing accessibility and global circulation of art and art museums as a result of the reproduction of art and the digitalisation of museums. The second chapter analysed prominent examples of digital applications in art museums worldwide. This analysis points out why museums use these technologies and how. This part categorised according to the type of technology; each has related examples with images. The last chapter has three parts: the digitalisation processes of art museums in Turkey, prominent applications from Turkey, and the digitalisation of Pera Museum as an example. As a result, this research highlights significant points in the process and cause-effect relationships between them. At the same time, while a literature review is done with existing examples, it aims to compare worldwide practices with those in Turkey and create research areas for further researches.

Contemporary art organizations against precarious conditions of artists in Turkey after 2010s
(İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi, 2022) Akay, Tüten; Yıldız, Esra
ABSTRACT: This thesis deals with the artist organizations formed by the artists against the precarious condition in the field of contemporary art in Turkey after 2010. In the 1980s, free market economy and neoliberalism were also influential in Turkey, the state left the field of culture and art to the control of the private sector, and contemporary art and its institutions began to be supported largely through sponsors. Contemporary art and its institutions in Turkey have undergone transformations in the determination of the art market, with the effect of globalization after the 1990s. While the number of art institutions increased, the improvement in the production and working conditions of the artists did not occur to the desired extent, and the fact that private institutions were more active in the field of art led to labor debates and anti-institutional movements among the artists. The inadequacy of the legal regulations regarding the status and rights of the artists raises questions about the visibility of the artists and how much their rights are protected or by whom. Artists in the field of contemporary art, affected by the economic and political fragility of Turkey after 2010, try to find solutions to problems in artist organizations and unions against the situation of precarity. This situation shows that artists need associations that will discuss their own precarity together and offer solutions. Within the scope of the thesis, artist-centered organizations established against the precarious conditions were examined. The common feature of the artist organizations included is that they carry out labor and rights-based efforts that support and influence artists in the field of visual arts, even though they do not have a legal status. In addition, it is aimed to create a discussion for the present through interviews with artists on the definition of being precarious, what kind of partnerships they need, and the effects of Turkey's changing political climate from the 2010s to the present in the thesis.

Reconsidering the public role of art museums: an analysis of education programs of modern and contemporary art museums in Istanbul for visitors with visual impairments
(İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi, 2022) Cevahiroğlu, Ayşenur Sümeyye; Yıldız, Esra
ABSTRACT: In the 21st century, with the changing definition of museums, their social roles begin to come to the fore and are discussed. Museums aim to be accessible to everyone and be more inclusive and democratic public spaces. In this respect, especially since the 1960s and 1970s, various educational programs and exhibitions have been increasingly held for visitors with visual impairments in museums in different parts of the world. However, works on making museums more accessible in Turkey, including for blind and partially sighted visitors, just began in the 2000s and are very limited. This study aims to investigate and evaluate the education programs of the modern and contemporary art museums in Istanbul for the visitors with visual impairments, and to learn the expectations of blind and partially sighted visitors from museums, and to reveal the knowledge that enables them to find solutions to the problems they encounter in museums. In this context, the studies of modern and contemporary art museums in Istanbul for blind and partially sighted visitors were investigated. For this purpose, interviews were held with people who organize education programs for the blind and partially sighted visitors in three private modern and contemporary art museums in Istanbul (Istanbul Modern Art Museum, Sakıp Sabancı Museum, and Arter), and their education programs were examined. In addition, this thesis aims to present strategies for museums to be more accessible and inclusive for blind and partially sighted visitors.

Management of visual artist estates and the case of Turkey
(İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi, 2021) Yentürk, Ayşe Serra; Ada, Serhan
ABSTRACT: The aim of this thesis is to explore the scope of visual artist estates and the impact of their management on the art historical writing. Fundamentally, it examines the theory that the artists’ legacies are effectively comprehended when their work is contextualized, that they contribute to the cultural heritage of their origin in proportion to the work that goes into planning and safeguarding their estates. Emphasizing the artists’ intentions and requests as key factors in this venture, the research evaluates related practices in the West after the post-war period in comparison to those observed in Turkey after the 1980’s. The research focusing on the actual practices in Turkey has mainly been conducted by means of interviews with key players, given the fact that the subject points out to an uncharted territory of literature in Turkey. Based on these interviews, it has been established that the artists, their heirs and the commercial galleries assuming representational roles often operate in a marketdriven field, meaning little consideration is given to the structuring of estates and keeping in line with the legislation of the Law on Intellectual and Artistic Works in Turkey. Conversely, it has been ascertained that parties prioritizing the advocacy of estate assets have not only engendered more viable legacies, which are secured from being disintegrated and, by extension, being misconstrued as art historical materials, but have also yielded new perspectives on the artists.

Sustainable tourism at world heritage sites: Site management approach from four european cities
(İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi, 2021) Schockmel, Marie Anne; Robins, Altan Asu
ABSTRACT: The aim of this thesis is to set out how site management plans are a tool for sustainable tourism at UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Since heritage and tourism industries have inherent contrasts, seeking a sustainable balance between cultural heritage conservation and tourism development at World Heritage Sites in order to both preserve their Outstanding Universal Value and enhance tourism is crucial. By means of an all-encompassing site management plan, conservation and tourism can be done sustainably and all concerned stakeholders can be involved in the management process. This thesis covers the topic of sustainable tourism and site management plans by way of a literature review and a document analysis. For its case studies, the thesis analyzes how the issue of tourism is covered in the site management plans of four UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Europe: Florence, Venice, Bath and Edinburgh. Besides identifying if the topics of sustainable cultural heritage tourism and stakeholder participation play a role in these site management plans, the thesis depicts the actions focusing on tourism that those site management plans include. Throughout the study, it became clear that the four case studies illustrate two different paradigms of management planning and stakeholder participation in Italy and in the UK. The study is concerned with the question, whether these two different paradigms have different outcomes in terms of achieving sustainable tourism.

Community engagement through public programs in art and cultural ınstitutions in Istanbul
(İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi, 2021) Çelen, Miyase; Yıldız, Esra
ABSTRACT: With the change of socio-cultural atmosphere, the social function of art and cultural institutions and their relations with society has gained more importance. It is an ongoing debate that the relationship between art and cultural institutions and the public has been transformed or should be transformed. The active engagement of communities in art institutions is not a new discussion however, it becomes a necessity in many ways in the 21st century instead of being just a beneficial tool. This thesis explores the relations between art and cultural institutions and society through public programs based on the discussions about the role of contemporary art institutions in democratic societies. The point where these programs make a difference is that they are no longer seen as just a method for audience development, but instead these programs allow the active participation of communities, interprets social trends, and responsive to current interests, problems, and debates, as institutions abandon their authoritarian and didactic approaches. The thesis examined the community engagement practices of SALT, Arter, and Istanbul Modern, which are among the impactful art and cultural institutions in Istanbul, through the selected public programs as cases and in this way, evaluated the relationship of these institutions with their users. The study questions why community engagement is regarded as important, how public programs create opportunities and how it is implemented in art and cultural institutions in Istanbul through public programs; data obtained from interviews with relevant departments from selected institutions were used in addition to literature research. The concepts of community and community engagement, the development of community engagement discussions and the trends that have influenced today's practice, and the main debates about the active engagement of the society in art and cultural institutions are analyzed. Afterward, it is aimed to examine the ongoing discussions in this field in terms of modern and contemporary art and cultural institutions in Istanbul.

The role of cultural institutions as a stakeholder in cultural planning: examples of Sinopale and Sinop sustainable development association
(İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi, 2021) Kırcan, Cansu; Dervişoğlu Okandan, Gökçe
ABSTRACT: Culture has become a valuable source and a tool in many fields because of the changes experienced as a result of globalisation. “The cultural planning” is the reflection of this situation in the field of city planning. It is crucial to work with the right stakeholders for a successful, long-term and publicly adopted planning effort. I inquired about the subject “Are cultural institutions an effective stakeholder of local governments in cultural planning?” in the study. I make this inquiry thanks to Sinopale, International Sinop Biennial and Sinop Sustainable Development Association, which conducts cultural studies in the city of Sinop through action research methods and in which I am also an action researcher. I started my examinations with the reasons underlying cultural planning, the types and important elements of cultural planning in the first chapter. Then I analyse the stakeholder theory and the stakeholders of cultural planning. In the second chapter, I study the cultural infrastructure of Sinop, a small-scaled city, and the stakeholders working to strengthen this region. In the third chapter, I examine the development of action research and present samples from its usage in the city scale. In the rest of the third chapter, I have analysed the general structure of Sinopale and Sinop Sustainable Development Association and their works in the field of cultural planning. I realized that the works performed support the elements of cultural planning. I am of the opinion that larger, diverse, long-term and productive studies can be carried out by combining the knowledge and potential of these institutions with the resources of the local government and by making the works not outside of the local government's plan, but within the plan.

The importance of management structures in career development of young classical musicians in Turkey: Contemporary Education Foundation (ÇEV) as a case study
(İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi, 2020) Çoruk, Seda; Yıldız, Esra
ABSTRACT: This thesis focuses on career management structures of young musicians in classical music sector in Turkey. To understand these management structures, young Turkish musicians who continue their careers in the field of classical music without any support or continue with support from different management styles, such as a manager and foundation scholarships have been studied. In the first part of the thesis, the issues of career management of an artist and the necessary collaborators in this management process were discussed. In the later chapters, the historical process of cultural policies and management is discussed to analyze the current state of classical music sector in Turkey. In the last section, the private sector's contributions to the classical music industry and artists in the name of social responsibility have been studied, and Contemporary Education Foundation (ÇEV), which is an important institution that exemplifies this process in Turkey, is examined. With the “music revolution”, whose roots are based on Westernization moves in the 19th century and its main momentum based on the Republican period's breakthroughs, various forms of protection have been adopted to support artists, especially musicians who are hoped to play leading roles with their extraordinary talent or creative productions, while some young artists were sent abroad by special law passed to elite centers for education. However, the political turmoil experienced such as World War II followed by the tension during the Cold War as well as uncertainties, naturally also affected cultural policies; the framework examined has no longer been accepted as one of the priorities of the state; rather, the start of subsidies at the disposal of private enterprises, and projects and scholarship funds carried out under the name of corporate social responsibility began to transform with contributions in the form of corporate protection and sponsorship, and the proliferation of management structures such as management has been experienced as an extension of this process. ÇEV (Contemporary Edeucation Foundation, 1994) example has been identified as one of the important social responsibility project models that support young musicians in the classical music sector in Turkey today. In this thesis, the impact of such institutions on artists’ career and the sufficiency of such management style are discussed through interviews with young musicians, who have benefitted from ÇEV’s ‘Young Talents’ scholarships. The effect of the concept of artist management in the classical music sector for enabling young musicians to reach to larger masses, and the importance of developing cultural policies and support mechanisms, such as ÇEV, respectively, were discussed.

Creative industries in Turkey and the relationship to higher education
(İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi, 2020) Bilgiç, İlkay; Dervişoğlu Okandan, Gökçe
ABSTRACT: This study aims to reveal how higher education institutions contribute to the development of a creative industry and the creation of a creative class in Turkey and the question of how local development is affected by this relationship. First of all, the meaning of the concept of the “creative industry” and its qualifications will be evaluated. Putting the concept of “creative industry” in a context and emphasizing its importance is only possible with understanding the characteristics of the current world and the characteristics of the transformation witnessed. It can be argued that the economic and social transformation that took place after the Cold War played a critical role in creating a healthy and sound basis of the conceptual framework. In this framework, the concepts related to the “creative industry” will be explained in the first part of the study. In this study, “cultural capital” is considered the primary input of the cultural economy, considering different cultural approaches. It will be evaluated both in terms of the development of the community and the benefits provided by individuals. Subsequently, the “cultural economy” will be examined as a field whose subject highlights the economic side of culture within the framework of four approaches to the concept. An evaluation will also be made on the actors involved in the supply of cultural products through this concept. Thirdly, the points of differentiation between the “creative economy,” a concept developed in Australia in the early 1990s, and the “creative industry” will be investigated. The commonalities of the conceptual approaches will be revealed. Finally, “creative class” will be handled through its scope and qualities and its connection to creativity. Following this section, which includes explanations about the conceptual framework, the relationship of these industries to the economy in the second section titled “Contribution of Creative Industries to the Economy”; in particular, how and to what extent it contributes to economic development will be evaluated. For this purpose, firstly, data collected from different countries regarding the relationship between creative industries and the economy will be explained. The potential of these industries, in terms of economic development, will be emphasized. It will be revealed that this potential is not only related to economic development but also plays an essential role in the realization of some social functions. Subsequently, the relationship between creative industries and local development has been evaluated in the context of the concept of the creative class and the clustering of this class in the cities. It has been emphasized that several steps of planning and implementation are necessary to maintain a positive relationship between the development of creative industries and achieving local development. In the third and final part of the study, in terms of developing creative industries in Turkey, an assessment will be made following the characteristics and potential. After Turkey's reference to the positive and negative characteristics that we have in this area, where an increasing interest in the creative industries will be highlighted and will be made an assessment of the steps taken in this regard. Ideas about how creativity is perceived in higher education will be revealed with data compiled from various studies. In this section, Abdullah Gul University is considered as a case, and the relationship of higher education with creating a creative class and local development has been tried to be answered through face-to-face interviews.

A critical analysis of "conservative art" discourse within the context of AKPcultural policy: Yeditepe biennial
(İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi, 2020) Koşak, Ayşe; Yıldız, Esra
ABSTRACT: This thesis focuses on the much-debated “Conservative Art" concept emerged in 2012 in Turkey, discussed among the art and literary communities at that time, reflections of the debate to the present and the “Conservative Art” concept within the context of cultural policies. Originated in France as a response to Enlightenment ideas and innovations brought by the French Revolution, the roots of “Conservative” thought in Turkey reaches until the Ottoman period and continued in the first years of the Republic of Turkey, especially up to the reactions to secularist implementations by the one-party regime. Lastly, AKP, which has emerged from political Islamist tradition, has positioned its party as the representative of the "conservative democracy" movement. The codes and symbols based on the tradition in which they come from and the concepts arising from their relationship with modernity will base the discussions on “conservative art”. The main purpose of this study is to investigate whether the reproduction of the power of the governing party tends to change the cultural atmosphere and turns its power into a cultural hegemony or not. In the light of in-depth interviews with five different people from different segments, the tendency of the AKP government on effecting cultural change is examined through the Yeditepe Biennial sample. Emphasizing the importance of traditional arts and primordial civilization, Yeditepe Biennial, the very first held in March 2018, is an example of the last point in the conservative culture and art discussions. This biennial, which is one of the steps taken by the government in order to dominate culture and arts, has turned into a political tool with its rhetorics.

Animation and ecocriticism: Hayao Miyazaki rediscovering the balance
(İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi, 2020) Çay, Merve; Thwaites Diken, Ebru
ABSTRACT: Global climate change and its effects on the planet attract attention by policymakers as well as scholars. Global ecological crises are gradually being examined both in cultural and scientific terms all over the world as a concept as the relationship between nature and people is examined further. Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki stands out with his critical approach to the relationship between humans and nature. Miyazaki's animated films Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind provide us with a different perspective on Mother Earth and the relationship between nature and people in connection to "past", "present" and "future". Miyazaki feeds on his own experiences and early works, namely Studio Ghibli, and reflects his artistic and aesthetic philosophy in addition to his cultural, ethical and political views. In this thesis, Miyazaki's three films are examined through three approaches in ecocriticism: Deep Ecology, Ecofeminism and Dark Ecology. Miyazaki does not differentiate between "good" and "bad" in establishing these relationships. Furthermore, he creates compromising characters between the natural and man-made world and offers us a balance between nature and human intervention. Nurtured by the belief in animism, he shows how humans create both cultural and physical pollution through the forces of nature called "kami"s, and how it has an impact on the natural environment. Using the power of animation to animate the non-living, he provides an emotional connection between the audience and nature without being trapped in humanizing nature. In this way, Miyazaki's narratives are in harmony with the views of post-human theory. Miyazaki maintains a unifying, and a not discriminatory narrative in our perception of nature by finding balancing solutions to dichotomies such as nature-man, human-nonhuman, man-woman, technology-nature.

Gender oriented discrimination in creative sectors and creative hubs as an alternative
(İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi, 2020) Koçoğlu, İlayda Çağla; Saka, Erkan
ABSTRACT: The economic focus shifted from production to the service sector with the neoliberal transformation. With this trend towards the service sector, the importance of information has increased. Creativity is very important for people to present the information they have. Globalization has brought an international integration process with different dynamics of the world. However, this integration brought along ordinaryization in terms of economy and competition between sectors. Creative sectors are able to combine the cultural heritage of the countries and even cities from the past with creativity, by making creativity, as well as competing between countries on a global scale. Neoliberal policies tried to exclude women from economic life. Today, women are exposed to many gender-based discrimination in the business world. The main reason for this is the increasing competition among men in the business world with the business divisions that develop with the industrial revolution. On the other hand, women's employment has a critical meaning for the economy of every country. The economy of many developing countries is in a size that can be developed by providing women employment. Although creative sectors offer lots of opportunities for employment for women, it is an area dominated by men. This thesis study will primarily present a historical content on creativity and the development of creative sectors. Later on, creative fields of work emerging on the occasion of creative sectors and the results of neoliberal policies will be explained and exemplified in Istanbul. In the following sections of the study, the focus will be on gender-based discrimination faced by women in creative collaborative workplaces where gender equality is observed in terms of membership. While emphasizing the importance of creating a community and working with a community, the extent of patriarchal mentality in communities will be explored.

Visitor management for sustainable tourism: the case of İstanbul's Princes' Islands
(İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi, 2020) Çiftlikçi, Elif Selcen; Robins, Altan Asu
ABSTRACT: The purpose of this paper is to create a framework to set the foundation for the visitor management planning in the Princes’ Islands. The Princes’ Islands are a cluster of 9 islands located in the southeast of Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara. The fact that Princes’ Islands are overcrowded with visitors especially during the months of summer, creates major problems not only for the local inhabitants but also for the protection of the destination and its cultural and natural heritage. By means of a holistic visitor management plan, visitor flows and impacts can be managed more efficiently, the unique heritage assets of the Princes’ Islands can be better protected to be passed down to the next generations, and sustainability of tourism can be achieved in the long term. This thesis aims to understand what constitutes a visitor management plan, what are different methodologies to conduct visitor management planning; who would carry it out, what would the priorities of the plan be, how would it be executed, how would it be updated, and what would be the effect of having a visitor management plan in the Princes’ Islands. Throughout the study different examples of visitor management models, techniques and strategies from other destinations and heritage sites located both in Turkey and overseas were analyzed to be able to provide the most appropriate visitor management practices for the Princes’ Islands. The research was conducted as a mixture of desk-based research and a field work involving a fact-finding mission to the Islands.

How to live together: examining the role of culture and the arts in the case of Syrian refugees in Bursa
(İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi, 2020) Barçin, Ali Buğra; Robins, Altan Asu
ABSTRACT: The civil war that began in Syria in April 2011 caused the forced migration of millions of refugees around the world. One of the most affected countries, probably the most, by the massive immigration influx has been Turkey. Due to its open-door policy, geographical proximity, and facilitating administrative and legal arrangements, Turkey has become the leading country in hosting Syrian refugees. As Syrian refugees' stay turned from temporary to long-lasting one and their stay prolonged, problems arose both regarding the integration of Syrians and their tensions with the local population. This study will mainly examine the role of culture and the arts in both developing successful integration practices and reducing the tension between local people and immigrants. In addition, it will be discussed which policy approaches and political philosophies behind those approaches could be appropriate on the issue of cultural diversity in order to achieve peaceful coexistence in society from a broader perspective. Moreover, the chronology of the Syrian Refugee Crisis and the approaches of both the Turkish government and Turkish citizens towards this crisis will be presented as a background to the study. Culture and the arts sector in Bursa, where one of the most crowded Syrian populations in Turkey accommodate will be the focus of this study. Furthermore, the study will examine whether the stakeholders of culture and the arts in Bursa have any attempts on the social inclusion of Syrian refugees. If not, in addition, there will be an attempt to explicate the reasons not to contribute to the peaceful coexistence of Syrian refugees and local people in Bursa. In the final section, policy recommendations to these stakeholders will be presented.

The role of non-governmental organizations in urban heritage management: ngos on the İstanbul historic peninsula
(İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi, 2020) Baran, Fulya; Ada, Serhan
ABSTRACT: The concept of participation with a managerial approach is not a new phenomenon in cultural heritage management literature and practices. However, involving ordinary people in the decision-making processes is still challenging as each case has its own dynamics unique to each heritage site’s cultural and political environment. In Turkey, participation has legally been on the agenda for heritage management since 2004. This study examines participation by focusing on the roles of the NGOs involved in the urban heritage management of the Istanbul Historic Peninsula, Turkey. The Historic Peninsula provides a worthwhile case as it is the subject of the first site management plan on an urban scale in Turkey, which stayed in action from 2011 until its first revision in May 2018. Based on the analysis of in-depth interviews as well as projectbased literature and media review, the findings of the study, which cover the years between 2011 and 2018, point to an apparent distinction between the NGOs listed in the SMPs and the ones that are not listed. They also prove that, unlike European countries, for the case of the Historic Peninsula, a bottom-up approach is a powerful factor that facilitates participation. The findings of the thesis shall be valuable for any future research examining the effects of local and cultural differences in generating participation.

Cultural management and policies of theatre for children: İstanbul metropolitan municipality city theatre children’s unit
(İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi, 2019) Ak, Emine; Yıldız, Esra
This thesis analyzes the theatre for children in cultural management context in connection with the art and cultural policies for children and gives İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality Theatre Children Unit as a case example. Impacts of cultural policy and management of theatre on the dynamics of theatre for children, such as programming/repertoire, location, architecture, design of theatre halls, use of technology, playwrights, education of actors, and the audience were investigated through case study research method. Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality City Theatre as a cultural institution was analyzed according to the ‘Implications of Good Governance’ by Jacques Bourgault, and variables that have impacts on the development of theatre for children in İstanbul were defined to understand the reasons behind why theatre for children could not be institutionalized in Turkey since its establishment in 1935. In addition, the answers to such questions as why governments and big corporations deal closely with cultural activities of children, theatre for children as a social engineering instrument, and if cultural policies follow the changing children’s culture in the information era were scrutinized. According to the findings, variables of both supply and demand functions of theatre for children were defined and constraints that have an impact on these variables were determined under three categories; psychological, political, and socioeconomic. As a result, the development of theatre for children in Turkey and efficiency in the management of theatre strictly depend on the resolution of these constraints. Apart from the inadequacy the of tangible/intangible cultural infrastructures, today the biggest challenge of the theatre for children in Turkey is the problem of perception: the perception of ‘the child’ of policymakers, and the actors’/directors’ perception of the theatre for children.

A diasporic welcome integration of immigrants through spatial patterns Syrian Circassians in Düzce as a case study
(İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi, 2019) Gökesaoğlu, Elmashan; Kaya, Ayhan
In the course of a globalizing world, the concept of migration has evolved dynamically with its branches extending towards multiple fields of social sciences embracing education, health, identity, employment and other socio-demographic issues. However, after brief reviews of literature, it has been observed that there are limited number of studies that focus on migration within the context of space and place –by space meaning; the tangible physical form of a city, village, street or a building and by place meaning; a homeland, motherland or a neighborhood after the factor of ‘inhabitants’/ human relations and social integration gets in the picture. In this sense, the initial purpose of this dissertation is to offer a meaningful synthesis of migration matters and spatial patterns of refugees. A comprehensive research is carried out to analyze the role of space and place during the integration and socialization processes of immigrants. Syrian Circassians in Düzce will be used as a sample case to track the wondered outcome of the research: can space and place –as an end in itself- play a facilitating / normalizing role through the challenging phases of migration?

Corporate support to the arts and culture: Jazz festivals in Turkey
(İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi, 2019) Onan, Melek Müge; Dervişoğlu Okandan, Gökçe
The aim of this study is to reveal the positive and negative alignments of companies' cultural and artistic investments especially in areas such as jazz festivals. The method used to make these inferences is John Balmer's The AC4ID Test Model and The REDS2 Process. The data obtained as a result of the field survey shows the position of the banks (Garanti Bank and Akbank) in which they are aligned. Accurate identification of corporate brand identity types of banks is an important step for all future activities. The focus of the thesis is to understand how Garanti Bank and Akbank contributed to public awareness and cultural development by making use of corporate brand management about the jazz festivals it supported and invested in. Participation of customers, stakeholders and target audiences at sponsored / supported events such as jazz festivals is the key point for progress. Therefore; it is adviced that Garanti Bank and Akbank can take this model as guide to reformulate their brand identity correctly.
