The Evolution of Turkey's Domestic Political Situation: Progress and Resistance
    (Fundacio Cidob, 2006) Ozel, Soli
To briefly analyse the great political, social and economic transformation Turkey has experienced in the past decade, the author highlights, in the first place, the country's international dimension, since one must not deal with Turkish politics and its dynamics only in relation with its internal trends and factors. Next, he offers a list of accomplishments, obstacles and weak points in Turkish domestic politics, to focus on the role of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the lack of opposition. Finally, he underscores the fact that, although there remains a great deal to do, the profound transformation of Turkish society, its integration into global markets and the re-structuring of Turkish capitalism are already a reality.

    A Passionate Story with Europe
(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2008) Ozel, Soli
Turkey-EU relations have a long and complicated history burdened with respective images about one another. On several dimensions though the completion of these relations through membership of Turkey in the EU is of immense importance. Already the Caucasus crisis has shown what a resurgent and resentful Russia may mean for European security. Efforts to keep Turkey at bay by proposing a Mediterranean union or suggestions of a 'privileged partnership' are unlikely to succeed. To better understand how membership will transform Turkey's politics and in what ways this will benefit the EU one must look at the interface between Turkey's domestic transformation of the past three decades and the changing international environment.

Turkey: The Year of Living Dangerously
(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2008) Ozel, Soli
Turkish democracy passed its maturity'' test in 2007. The massive shift of power from the Kemalist establishment to the rising, mostly provincial elites and their allies culminated in the landslide victory of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in the summer, which increased and consolidated its electorate after its first electoral victory in 2002. One of the main fault lines of the Turkish social and political order, secularism, took centre stage in the military's interference in the presidential election debacle, the ensuing massive demonstrations and the parliamentary and presidential elections that followed. At the same time, xenophobic nationalism, the dark side of democracy, raised its ugly head, fed further by the exacerbation of PKK violence. With the AKP's monopolisation of power, Turkey's politics are in uncharted waters and many of the givens of the republican era are being questioned. Unable to cope with the profound economic and social transformations and changing composition of the population due to massive migration, the old political structures are crumbling, yet the new political leadership, so adept at municipal government and so pragmatic in its approach to problem solving, has yet to offer the country a comprehensive vision of its politics.
